Forums - Sales - $1 Million Worth of GOODS SOLD IN PLAYSTATION HOME!!!

What I find strange is that there's a reported 17 MILLION PSN accounts, but only 20% of them have downloaded Home which is FREE.

Is this an indication of how few people are even interested in looking at Home? Or perhaps more likely that there are no where near 17 million actual users of PSN? Or is it a little of both?

I find it a little unbelievable that Sony has 85% of it's PS3 users with PSN accounts, yet only 20% of those users have even downloaded Home to have a look. Something doesn't add up.

This is because Sony is counting all PSN users, including PSP users. The PS3 portion is probably closer to 10-12 million.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Well business wise for Sony these microtransactions are just the icing on the cake, the bulk of the money from Home will be made from third party adverts. Red bull must be paying a bundle for there space in Home, certainly paying in the thousands.

Thousands is nothing and can be safely ignored. Unfortunately there's no data on how much money they really get from that.

I thought each PSN user could create more than one account, and that many people have different accounts for each region. Don't quote me on this though since I don't know how they count those numbers.

If they can keep this up, they will make the first billion in 57 years.

Well MS stated they made one billion on the marketplace since Xbox360-release.

38 months = 1140 days = 1 billion USD

1 day = 877,192 USD.

1 week = 6,140,350 USD

And of course there are fees to pay, which will be like $500,000,000 a year. (17 million users - I assumed 10 million gold) I doubt Sony will make this with advertising. Well and there is advertising on XBL as well... with a greater Userbase, so more money for MS again.

Your whole post, aside from the math is pure speculation.

First off, you act as if the rate of money earned is going to be flat.  That it's going to take them 20 days to make a million dollars for all eternity.  That is wrong.  And you act as if MS started out in the first 7 days of XBL and made 6 million dollars.  The fact is, that as more people buy PS3s, and dl and log into home, the amt made will increase.  And also, he never said since XBOX 360 they made 1 billion, what was said was "The Redmond, Wash., company said consumers have spent more than $1 billion on Xbox Live".  So, yeah, who knows how they arrived at the numbers, and if you throw in XBL numbers from the original XBOX, the achievement is still big, but a tad more in perspective.  On top of that, you're talking about the whole of XBL (memberships + XBLM (XBLA + Movies, Music, TV shows, gaming content, etc), but only HOME.  You need to compare the $ that the PS Store + Video store make also, in order to make a fair comparison.  And also, the membership fees, are most likely included in the 'consumers have spent more than 1 billion on live' comment.  But since it doesn't say either way, neither of us have a point.

@ infamy

If you get a PSP and want to go to the store, you have to make a PSN account, and of course there are people with multiple PSN accounts.  Just like there are multiple people with XBL accounts.  I have 3 of each on the PS3 and XBOX 360.  But that's anecdotal, so doesn't mean too much.

Are people realling comparing XBL and Home? Seriously?
Free service, with the added option of purchasing items.
XBL, forced to pay to play.

Do people really compare xbox 360 arcade console to PS3 80gb console?

Cheaper console, with the added option of purchasing add-ons

PS3, forced to pay for unwanted add-ons (read: bluray, wifi...etc)

People will compare anything to prove a point, even if those things are apples and oranges.

I fail to see how people are impressed by that 1m figure.

How many cups of darkness have I drank over the years? Even I don't know...

$1 million is a psychologically satisfying number for those who aren't used to read news about business/finance.

Given how many people said HOME was a waste of time, and a failure, and things to that nature, $1 million seems like Sony is doing something correct.  Some people must enjoy the microtransactions.

I agree that around $1 million per month is not a bad number if it continues for the next few months/years. However it's not extraordinary, and it probably doesn't make Home a cash cow or anything like that.
