Forums - Sony - Kaz says Little Big Planet sold 1.3 million-- oh noes! Did I win my bet?

"If you play online maps with local coop, does every user have to have a registered username?"

No. I've played online with 3 or 4 other friends (2 at a time) on my PS3; they always piggybacked on my account -- there's no other user set up on my PS3.

That's assuming every single person that bought the game is playing it online, you prepared to make that argument?

We could estimate 70% of users go online...

Its the PS3, free online and wifi would translate into a pretty high rate of users online.... Add the fact that user generated content is LBP's bread and butter.

But that doesn't change the fact that Kaz said 1.3 million UNIQUE users have played LBP. Wouldn't most people playing LBP at home have a friend or two join them to play just to try it out? I thought LBP big selling points was that it was a Friendly Family Coop Game that you play online for unlimited amount of gameplay??

I think you're overestimating the amount of users that go online.

Edit: Let me rephrase that question - Can you access LBP online stuff without signing in to PSN?

Edit2: If you play online maps with local coop, does every user have to have a registered username?

No and no.

But you have no evidence for it to be 70%, you're just guessing, and then you'll be guessing at how many people made PSN accounts for their friends to play LBP (because there is a "guest" option which would not show as a different PSN user).  So in the end you can tell absolutely jack crap about the overall sales for LBP using this number other then it probably being more than 1.3 million and probably less than say 2.6 million (because probably more than 50% of people who buy it go online).

hehe, you call me out saying I have no evidence then you throw in your guess without any evidence either....

Same with your 1.3 to 2.6 million guess...

I'm saying more copies of LBP have been used by multiple PSN accounts then LBP copies never used online, you're arguing the opposite.

But you're right, we don't have any evidence.

I just think that the LBP (which is supposedly centered around coop and online) would have more then 1.3 million "Unique" users with 1.8 million copies sitting in peoples living rooms.

During the 42nd minute...

"More then 1.3 million unique users are playing this title"

Doesn't say anything about sales... as a matter of fact, couldn't multiple users be playing off the same copy?? Meaning that LBP sold even less??

Edit: Twesterm I think you still won your bet!!

Thanks to you Twesterm, going get even more cash. :)

I blame Wii Fit Little Big Planet

There's a difference between giving a gigantic range that 1.3m could mean and trying to nail down what it means.  I am saying that it is foolish to try and guess at a percentage and then say what the number of LBP copies really is based on this statement, all you can tell is a wide range of possibilities based on different guesses for the number of people using online.

Could mean that.  Also, it could be used copies of the game around, which would bring the number down even lower.  Or if you borrowed a game, could be even lower.

But it doesn't take into account people not playing on PSN, people who don't have internet access, or people who haven't made PSN accounts yet.

And this argument was presented earlier (by me coincidentally), if you read the thread, you'd see that the information Kaz gave doesn't give credence to whether or not the actual number is higher or lower than 1.3 million, which, again, was already said earlier in the thread.

But you probably don't care since you're part of the LBA.
Actually DMJ, it is just as likely (more likely) he is talking about the number of people who bought the game, as he doesn't say "playing online."

Well actually if you had actually gone and listened to the source material it should have been obvious that he was talking about online play.  For one thing, this is immediately following a bunch of PSN usage statistics -- 17 million so far, 2.1 in the most recent month, etc. etc.  For another, here's a word-for-word transcript:

LittleBigPlanet here on the back here -- so LittleBigPlanet actually allows you to channel your inner video game designer.  What does that mean?  It gives you the ability to imagine and create level after level; and then, it allows you to share your masterpiece by easily uploading it, all right, onto the network.  So today, there are over 1.3 million unique users [who] are playing this title.

So when we first launched LittleBigPlanet, we launched with about 50 levels on the disc itself -- that's about 10 hours of gameplay.  But now with all the user generated content, this has grown to more than 300,000 levels, and that equates to actually 17,400 hours of gameplay.  And if you do the math, you can be playing 24/7 and you could be playing this game for two straight years.

So this is really the first time that user generated content, as well as social networking -- and gaming -- have really come together under one title.  And this is something that you can sit down and play with your ten-year-old daughter, or really with your hardcore gaming friends as well.  And it's another gaming experience that's just -- not just unique to the PlayStation 3, it's possible only on the PlayStation 3.

So:  no, he doesn't actually say "playing this title online", but it's clear that his entire focus is on online play.  Also, it's completely nonsensical to speak of "unique users" when referring to retail sales.

I think we've already confirmed it's online play, so I don't know why this thread still survives.

Uhh, nobody posted for 6 hours, it was slipping away.

Then you just revived it...

Yeah unfortunately the vagueness of this data point essentially makes it worthless. We would need to know a ton more information to turn it into anything that resembles useful for modifying numbers. While I am glad a quircky title like LBP is doing better than 1.3 million, it does make the part of me that must know everything feel sad to not be able to get a solid shipped number.
