Forums - Sony - 160GB PS3 has to make a profit for Sony

Well I don't think Pain should count in terms of cost, because it doesn't cost them anything to give it out for free. (it's just a coupon for a free download right?) While it is a loss of a potential $10, it doesn't add anything to the total cost of putting together a 160GB...right...

right?

360 IS OPERATIONAL AFTER 37 DAYS!

A game costs about $5 to manufacture, after the packaging, manual, disc, etc are all included. A 160GB HDD costs about $3 more to make than a 80GB one.

So yes, Sony is retailing the 160GB bundle for $100 more, while it only costs them about $8 more.  They are almost certainly profiting considerably from it.  iSupply's number is way off, I think.  I think they are overestimating the cost of the 80GB (to Sony) considerably.

If they are actually selling any decent amount. Doubtful though.

I think all you have to do is check the number of Uncharted copies sold weekly to find out. I don't believe its available at many retailers separately any longer.

Looks like last week it was: ~84,035, according to VGC numbers.  That's what... 20% or so of all PS3s sold?  That's a long way toward balancing out the overall loss from iSupply's estimate, which I believe is actually quite a bit over the actual cost.

$469 is just for making a ps3. lots of other costs like transport, retailor fee are not calculated in it. anyway sony lose money for each ps3 sale.

Shipping en masse is generally quite cheap, now (Long live The Box!), retailer fees won't be huge.

I think you do probably have to count in some cost for Uncharted as they do lose some money on the sales

Retail fees cannot be more than $30.

Adding value to their bundles is what might just keep sony going this year, and put them back on track

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD
