Forums - Nintendo - Should Nintendo launch Wii2 first?

OK, before I say what it is I am saying I should probably clarify what I am not saying.

I am not saying that there is anything wrong with the wii, that the bottom is going to fall out of the market or that Nintendo is in any other way required to or motivated to launch early. Niether am I saying that Nintendo will make a decision that flies in the face of twenty five years of their policy.

What I am saying is this.

Recently a couple of posters have brought up a comment of Iwata's where he points out that gen 6 was effectively over before it began. PS2 was the sequel to the most successful console of all time, a console that had the strongest 3rd party support of all time, and PS2 came out 18 months before GC and XB. PS2 had all the developers in their corner, and had them pumping out high quality games before two of their competitors even launched. The gen was over before Nintendo and MS launched; they never had a chance.

Next gen Nintendo is likely to have the same high expectations as Sony did for PS2. They will likely have more 3rd party support than ever before in the company's history. So my question is would an early launch for Wii2 be strategically smart for Nintendo, and could they leverage such a launch into a PS2 style dominance of the market?

No, most people don't want to buy a new system every 5 years.

They should keep focusing on getting people to buy the system and continue to satisfy them.

no, i think they should do craploads of development on it, developing say a vew different controller versions, ect. then waiting for sony and microsoft to release their consoles so nintendo can't get their ideas stolen again so easely.

come try out the computer game i've been working on for my high school senior project, titled sling ball. http://vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=47568

I could be wrong but I think one of the most dangerous things Nintendo could do is to try too hard to out manoeuvre their competition ...

Unless they're put under pressure to release a new console by the release of another console, Nintendo should probably target the end of 2012 to release their next system. While a 5 year cycle is acceptable to most consumers, having an extra year or two before you release a new console adds the perception of a lot of value and reassures people that they will get decent value when they buy your next console.

Well, what is motion plus then?

I would also like to see some additional plug in's to the Wii Remote.

Theres no point releasing the second wii too early, considering the success of this wii is going to probably last for a long, long time

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

I would say they should launch there Wii 2 (what ever they will call it) in 2012. They are selling like hot cakes and you know that Sony will not make another console till maybe then. So they will still be selling the Wii like crazy so why not wait and perfect the next console to the best of your ability.

I'd say wait a few more years for it. I don't think they should announce first.

I reckon the Wii 2 will be the last released of the big 3
