Forums - Gaming - What were your overall expectations around the Wii and PS3's launch?

Here were mine with regard to the PS3:

July 2005:

"It will probably take some time before developers manage to get the most out of this platform, as has for example also been the case with the classic Amiga chipsets. The early Amiga games don't compare well to the complex graphics used by for instance game like Elfmania or Lion Heart."

2006:

"I believe it will take at least a few years until we see some games starting to push the PS3's capabilities. I believe conversions will initially look quite similar across different platforms, as for the games houses it's all about creating revenue. Development costs vs additional sales revenue, time is money to them. A bit like early Atari ST => Amiga conversions."

With regard to the Wii (2006):

"I don't think the Wii will fail, I think it will do better than the Nintendo GameCube did."

"I feel confident the Nintendo Wii will do well though due to its innovative gameplay"

Today: I think this is the year the PS3 will really show off its worth like I anticipated a couple of years ago to happen around this time (Yes I know it had the best 2008 line-up and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune already in 2007). With regard to the Wii, I was one of the very few I discussed with on forums who thought the Wii would be a success, but the Wii is now doing even well beyond my original expectations!

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

Around the Network

I read a lot of comments from vivid 360 fans back then that the PS3 and Wii would fail. Of course the Wii actually performed amazingly well and the PS3 sold better than the 360 taking equal time of availability. Also many claimed that the PS3 would be inferior to the 360 specs wise.

Were your expectations somewhat off or pretty much spot on?

I seem to remember that a lot of PS fans called the 360 a failure since it didn't include Bluray, and claimed that the Wii was kiddy. Of course they were adament that the PS3 would be on top almost from day one, but things didn't work out like that

Now for my expectations

Wii; Would be absolout madness at launch and unfindable for a few months, but after christmas production would exceed demand and it'd be easy to find one in stores around spring. It would enjoy decent sales for most of teh year until taking off at Christmas again, then it would start selling well year round. Basically, sort of what happened with the DS.

PS3; Impossible to find well after Christmas. Strong sales right out of the gate and being neck and neck, if not better than the 360, throughout most of 2007.

This is what I expected mid-2006 or so, before it began to become apparant that the wii could win, and before Sony started making some big blunders. Those predictions of mine were way of - I saw wiis in stores a handful of times throughout 2007, yet I saw numerous PS3s in stores in the weeks/days leading up to Christmas 2006.

Lets see...When my firend was gonna buy a Wii launch date,i was telling him "The Wii sucks, the graphics are so last gen",we'd go back and foruth with 360 vs Wii jokes, then the PS3 came (came out talking shit about 360 & Wii) so we both found a common enemy TEH PS3!!

Leading up to the launch of the PS3 and Wii I kept thinking that anyone who expected a $600 console to sell as well as the PS2 was delusional, and people who were discounting the Wii obviously had never seen how less dedicated gamers were excited about it.

Edit: To be fully honest, I didn't expect the Wii to do as well as it has done (I expected it to sell to a similar level as the NES did) or the PS3 to do as poorly as it has done (I expected it to have outsold the XBox 360 by now).

For me:
PS3: Will continue in the legacy of PS1 and 2 being by far the most popular and well supported system. Will be the hot Christmas item of 06' and will be sold out at least into March '07. I also assumed the former lost exclusives would stay on the system even helping sell the system better.

Wii: Will do good during the Christmas season but will be in ample supply for Christmas with its 1 million available at launch. The system will sell ok, about as good as GC headed by its classic IP's. May be Nintendos last system.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

I thought the PS3 would be "the" 7th gen console, but not by the margin the PS2 had because of the 360's launch date, and the $599 price. I stood in line for 20 hours to get one at launch. I have since sold it.

Wii, I was curious about the controls, and have always liked Nintendo since I got my NES with R.O.B., and have owned every console, except for VB. I knew I would pick one up in a year or so when it dropped down to $150 or even $99 dollars. I predicted it would be in last place again, though I knew it would do better than the GC. I had no idea it would be like this. I had the opportunity to get one at launch, and decided to wait as I just bought the PS3. I finally was able to get one in June 2007, and knew within the first three days I owned it that Nintendo would win this generation. Everyone I knew wanted to play it, even my wife, who HATES playing VG. Though the gaming dirth of late '07 had me a little unsure until No More Heros/Smash/Kart/Fit came out.

BAM! There it is!

I genuinely believed that the Wii would be the market leader this generation. Motion controls felt so innovative; a natural progression for the industry, and although 1:1 controls did not transpire initially, it promised to transform the gaming landscape, expand the boundaries of what constitutes a game, and open up a whole new realm of possibility in gaming experiences.

I must admit, in some respects, the Wii has not quite met these lofty expectations, but I'm still pleased with how things have panned out thus far. With the balance board and motion plus, the tools are there. Certainly, the Wii's best years are ahead of it. More developer support however would go far to ensure that it meets its obvious potential.

I expected people would get 2nd jobs just so they could have a small taste of the future....

I also expected the Wii to have MP3 and SSBB and MKWii much sooner than it did, but that didn't happen....

I along with most experts expected sony to dominate again because they had the games during the ps2 era. However, the 360 stole nearly all ps3 exclusives and left sony high and dry. At that point it was game over for the ps3
