Forums - Sales - David Reeves: Sony's priority is to make a profit....... right

Well, yes.

President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, David Reeves, has said that the priority for the PlayStation business in 2009 is to finally make a profit.

Speaking on the official PlayStation website, the exec noted that the company must reduce the pressure to turn a profit before concentrating on pushing games and services.

"The most important thing for us as a company in the very short term is for us to start making money," he said.

"This is a pledge that was made last March and is something that we are still very much on target to achieve. Once we have achieved this, I think it will be a very exciting time for PlayStation.

"Once we have alleviated that specific pressure, we can move forward at a rate of knots," added Reeves.

As well as previously announced titles on the horizon, Reeves also highlighted the launch of music and video download service Vidzone, for the PlayStation Network, as key to the console's offering in the coming year.

Vidzone was previously announced to go live in Q1 2009, but Reeves mentioned the service will not go live until later in the year.

"2009 promises to be a very exciting year for PS3, with blockbuster titles such as Heavy Rain and Killzone 2 coming out, whilst we have the music and video download service becoming available towards the end of the year."

"We have built our reputation over the years on great entertainment, and innovation and 2009 will be a prime example of PlayStation at its very best," added Reeves.

I actually don't think much about the Vidzone but seems like they saw it like a money make machine.

Yea.
I dont want Sony to sell tons of PS3s for a loss right now, id rather they sold like 5M consoles for a profit in 2009 and keep delivering quality titles and services.

Wasn't there a statement from the same person saying they could probably cut price around April 2009?

My guess is that when he produced that previous statement he hadn't yet considered the impact of the weak euro.

No, Sony never has said about a price cut I recall.
They say they PS3 is already good value etc.
If Sony had already announced a cut their Xmas PS3 sales would probably of been lower

I think I remember it now... I was talking about the SCEE leak (supposed to be confirmed by some Sony employee at neogaf from what I heard). I wouldn't be surprised if that leak was real but then the plans changed as I expected...

^Yep, this is the guy who talked about a price cut in March/April to become more competitive. And it's what I fully expect to happen. He's saying profit is a priority because he doesn't want people to think a price cut is coming soon, it would damage sales until the cut actually happens.

First time I heard about Vidzone. Is it like a Youtube you have to pay for?

Dont all companys want to make money? Seriously everyone knows that a company is in business to make money, why would he have to state that in an interview?

Very often money is sacrificed in the short-term to gain market share (in order to gain more money later).

What Reeves is telling us is what Sony has been telling to their investors for a year now: profit is the priority over market share.  I can post some quotes from last year if anyone's interested.

About damn time.

I doubt they will make money in the current fiscal year ...
