Well, their console saw a 130% increase in sales during December. This isn't exactly surprising... the fact that they use the percentage increase instead of raw numbers should teach us something

Edit: They also said their console saw a 40% increase year over year. This isn't surprising, as well as the PS3 sold much better than last year during the first half of the year.

Good ol' memory

I would rather prefer my product to have a great yearly growth over a few monthly backwards trend.

But then again you must consider the harsh times of the economic recession which will get worse before it can improve. During December of last year more people had their jobs. This December job losses have been at an all time high and an recession not seen since the Great Depression. Believe me, even my own company, FedEx is making job cut and paycheck cuts.

That being said, if we never dipped into this worldwide money crisis, we would see December 08 PS3 sales with a higher percentage tracking.

Your point would make sense if 360 and Wii sales weren't up so much higher than last year.  The video game industry actually increased sales this holiday season, just the PS3 didn't.

It is easier to come up with $199 to $250 after paying your monthly bills rather than $399. PS3 sells increased on a year by year basis, far more important than a few monthly spikes.

which would make sense except

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=21627

Final numbers aren't in yet but i guarantee you video games (as in $ spent on video games) is gonna be up YOY.  Software sales appear to be up 20% over last year's holiday season.  People are spending MORE money on video games, not less.

With the reduction in the price of 360, and the drop in PS3 sales then the average console price should be lower this year, which would mean that more people are buying consoles, but individually they are spending less on them.

Yea but only the 360 has a lower price this holiday season.  The higher hardware sales over last year easily makes up for the difference in hardware revenue.  Someone is saying they don't have the money, I call BS because they are spending that much money on video games, just spending it differently.

the problem is the entry price, the ps3 has the highest, thats why saying that buying a 360 with wireless+ hdd+ live is more expencive than the ps3 is nonesense since what the consumer really cares about is the entry price, and the wii/360 have a lower entry price than the ps3.

Yea i totally agree with you but that'a different argument from what he is saying.  He is saying because of the recession people don't have the money to spend on video games, you are saying that people see a better value in 360/wii than the PS3.

Well i dont think people see a better value on 360 than on ps3, xbox 360 at US$400 sold less than ps3 at US$400 and  Xbox360 at US$200 sells less than Wii at US$250, so people dont see more value on 360 they just see is cheaper.

so if the ps3 went up only 130% then teh 360 and wii went about what 500%? but hold on you can get to 100% easily you could always go from selling 10,000 to selling 20,000 and there is 100% so it can still be a bad thing. its just sony spin working at its best to make s ony sound like its doin good.

Wait someone explain the math to me as to how you all are getting 750k or so? I must be off a bit here.

2008 sales (including december) are total YOY 40% higher than 2007.  We know NPD january - november 2008 just not december.  Just do a little math and you'll figure it out.  750k.

I think you're all being a bit harsh in regards to Nov/Dec sales being down YOY. Everyone knows the effect of a pricecut last year was huge and to compare around those numbers and say that the PS3 is struggling this year is a bit off. 800k units sold in any territory in a month is a good effort.

Time for some happy news for Sony fans:

- Sony looks likely to have won the 2nd calendar year on shipped numbers. They only need 4 mill total shipped. Official numbers had a gap of 1.5 mill at end Sept. If MS shipped 5.5 mill this quarter, Sony need 4mill. VGC has them at 3.7 sold. Should be more enough fluff in the channel to keep a half mill lead. Expect Sony to trumpet that in 2 weeks.

- YOY numbers look set to be well up in Europe and US. Down in Japan around 20%, but so is the Wii. Shhh MS fans, keep quiet about your increase because where else could it go?

- Sony has won the VGC HD war in 2 out of 3 territories this year in units sold - Japan and Others, even with data to come

 W/E 05th Jan 2008 to 03rd Jan 2009:

Console Wii PS3 X360
Total
26,408,660
10,461,692
11,341,607
America
12,230,473
3,922,378
5,537,230
Japan
2,909,197
1,004,037
326,119
Total Others
11,268,990
5,535,277
5,478,258

- Sony look set to have beaten the sales forecasts of 10mill shipped in the fiscal year. If they do around 4mill in Q3, they need around 2.3 mill shipped in Q4 to beat their own targets. Given they shipped that last year Q4, this looks highly likely to have been exceeded this year.

YOY, sales are 28% down for the PS3 in the first week of 2009... Granted this is only one week, but I don't see a reason to expect them to be up, much less "well up" as you said. Am I misinterpreting something here?

In the first half of 2008, the PS3 was riding on its late-2007 huge price cut, GT5P and MGS4. It doesn't look to have anything similar in the beginning of 2009. The end of 2009 is another story, depending on GT5 and possible price cuts.

Ah I see, I was doing 130% of Nov NPD. Oh yea and if Sony shipped 4 million for the quarter they are stuffing the channels as they had plenty of stock left over from last quarter and it will take awhile to clear in first quarter sales or 09.
