Forums - Sales - At what point do price drops become desperation and a joke?

@HappySqurriel: Then... What would you call the 360 Core pricecut in the US (compared to the Premium new price)?

@CouchMonkey: Well, i wouldn't call Xbox any kind of success. And besides, looking at sales numbers tells you, that it's not 360, which is blocking Sony in the set-top box race.

uhh ya it is.....

according to sony they havent even dropped the price of the ps3 yet lol...but the only answer i can give is when a company goes the dreamcast route and gracefully bows out the console race..

PS3 and Xbox 360 both have had or are about to have price drops of some sort.

If Microsoft lowered the price of an XBox360 to $10 and therefore took a huge lead in the console wars numbers would it be a victory?

At what point does it become a desprate measure and a joke?

With most products I'm sure 'when it loses money' would be the answer.

OMG!  The mercedes dealer here in town had a price drop... Oh wait, they are trying to clear inventory?

Every product has a price drop eventually and only a rare exception would it not.  Name one console that was successful that never had a price drop?  When the Wii cuts their price can I call that a desperation move or a joke?

Then again, the joke is on Wii owners who are paying $250 for a souped up $50 gamecube with a motion controller that costs maybe $50.

We are talking about jokes?  Right?   Anyone?

Me so sorry, but I couldn't help it.

Although now I'm curious. Does anybody know, or is there any place where I can find the history of the MSRP of consoles? I couldn't find anything on Wikipedia, and evidently my googlefu is weak on this subject.

If you check the "console wars" section of Wiki, it gives the price cuts of recent consoles (back to PS1/N64 I think), but you have to do some hunting in various subtopics. Older consoles are harder to find info on. I was able to do it some a few months back, but I doubt I could recreate the work right now. I had to go system by system, I think using "history" and "price cut" as parameters.

Anyway...

I would say that severe cuts ($100 or so) twice between two holidays should raise eyebrows. ( cut shortly before and shortly after a holiday season is not quite as unusual). This gen may be a little harder to tell when new models are rolled out with the price cuts.

If the new 80Gig PS3 gets cut to $499, but also drops the game and controller, I wouldn't consider that too desperate (though it would start to be funny), nor if thy rolled out a "bargain" system before the holidays as that would essentially be replacing the 20 Gig model.

With the 360, they have gone so long without a drop, and now given one so marginal, that I think a second drop before the holidays wouldn't be too far out of line unless it's in the $100 territory. After the holidays, I think a second cut almost certain.

Well I'd imagine 6 Million by August 2007 was their worst case, in reality they were aiming for 10+ Million or even more.

Still "standing on its own" the PS3 is still not a failure, the war is still in its infancy :)

Are you kidding? In a vacuum, 4.15 million in eight months is a fricken joke!

And fricken joke is just above failure.

I mean, in a vacuum, the PSP is a success. But when you see how hard it is getting its ass handed to it by the DS it looks average at best.

Rockstar Jerry, I take it you didn't take your "funny" pills today. I was just joking around, but you come back all serious because I "dissed" your console of choice.

It's called a joke, you should google that term sometime so you can actually get one when it's posted.

Your so right..... and its a argue to myself of why i wont by a wii yet, look at the other consoles 400 and 600 and they are still losing money, and you have this little machine that costs barely anything to make and yet its selling millions I DONT UNDERSTAND SOMEONE SHOW ME THE LIGHT......

Well besides that people like the idea of motion controls /sigh and the fantastic games such as zelda, ssb, mario etc (which are some of the best titles EVER) O.o

Its a joke when you lower your console $50 - $70 and it doesnt even double the sales.

But no Sony's price drop wasn't desperate. They released a new SKU to take the 599 model's place didnt they? yep the 80GB is now in place and the 60 is being phased out like the 20GB model was.

I think the true price drop will happen in November when the PS3 turns 1 in the USA and Japan or when the 60GB is sold out, whichever comes first. All I know is that the 80GB model will sell faster then the 60GB one at $499 even without Motorstorm just because its a larger HDD and people want more storage space hence why M$ released the elite and 120GB HDD.
