While Sony’s PlayStation 3 is selling nowhere near as briskly as Nintendo’s Wii, the company’s gaming console has seen sizeable growth year-over-year in 2008.

PlayStation 3 hardware sales have risen 60 percent during the first 11 months of the 2008 when compared to the first 11 months of 2007. Hardware sales data for December 2008 is not expected until next week.

“We’ve had a solid holiday season and have delivered consistent growth throughout this year. [2008] was a pivotal year for PlayStation with the best software line up in the industry, a dramatic expansion of PlayStation Network including the launches of the video delivery service and the beta of the PlayStation Home,”  Ian Jackson, vice president of sales for Sony Computer Entertainment America, said in a statement to CNET.

Despite this, many people have pointed to Sony’s low November sales as a worrying sign for the PlayStation 3 system. Sony blamed the year-over-year percentage drop on the strength of November 2007’s sales, calling that month’s sales “”an abnormally strong month due to a price cut (with) the introduction of the the 40GB PS3.”

All well and good except as far as the doomseers are concerned, it's still going to fail.

well 2009 looks to be an even better year for sony in my opinion. profit above all else. when the ps3 starts to break even or dare i say making a profit then you will see the biggest comeback a console has ever had even though the ps3 has more or less had the biggest comeback being as it qas dead in 2007 lol

It looks like it is just talking about NPD sales. Sales were awful last year, it was $600 and battling with the GBA. You can call me a "doomseer" but PS3 had a hard time getting over 100k.

It probably helps that of those 11 months in 2007 it was only avalible for 8 of them in the EU.

There is still growth of course but it's incredibly misleading to ignore the missing months. Taking the sales regions individually they have 11*3 months in 2008, 33months. And 11*2+8 for 2007, 30. So right off the bat a 10% difference in the time the console was on sale.

Then again the article doesn't actually mention if the raise is america only or worldwide, so who knows, maybe it's just americas in which case there would be no time difference.
