In 8 years sure, not for at least another 3-4 years. The better question is that do people think Sony will discontinue the Playstation brand? That question is the one which really gets the worst of the worst Sony haters out to express there views.

They probably won't quit the console business. Making the PS3 profitable should be their main concern. They can pull a nintendo and stay in 3rd place but make a profit like they did with the gamecube.
OT: one gen that yet is not proven as a complete failure (some like to say it's over but I say we're at the end of the beginning) and sony drops out?
It took sega three generations of failures to make them go third party.

I don't believe it at all
But, if it ends up being true, the PS3 will be the last Sony product I'll ever buy

certainly the playstation brand is still powerful but how much has it lost this gen? its certainly not as powerful as it once was. One thing is for sure if and when they make ps4 there needs to be some drastic changes in their business handlings |
Well if you want to be perfectly honest the Playstation brand remains extremely strong, what people do not realize when I say Playstation is big is that Brand power =/= Having the money to buy the products. PSP and PS2 still makes money and at £200 people are kidding themselves if they dont think the PS3 will sell huge numbers.
Brand power will have a lot to do with that.

You would be surprised at the number of xbox360 fanboys waiting for the ps3 to fail and sony to go third party as sega did so there games would migrate to the 360, with a first and second party line up like sony's atleast we can understand why. |
wow just imagine how that would be like.. microsoft without any competition on both the pc and the console market
i mean... it used to be sega vs nintendo...then it was sega vs nintendo vs sony ... dreamcast gone... it was nintendo Vs sony vs microsoft --with sony gone too things wouldnt look all that great i guess... yeah there still nintendo. .but i woudlnt say that the wii is a direct competitor to the xbox or playstation the way it used to be with the snes and the genesis
back to topic.. "canceling" the ps 3 would probably cost them more than to continue the way it is going.. and unlike sega whose main focus was on consoles and games .sony has other segments ..so if the kraken looses 1-2 arms its bad but not the end of sony or the ps 3 .which doesent mean they shoudlnt improve the way things are handled

Yeah but sony is still 11 billion in debt. I agree we'll see strong sales with a price drop but that could be a while off. A company with 11 billion debt probably can't afford a price cut for the first half of the year and if so maybe 50 dollars

Indeed, it's actually quite sad how much people hate the Playstation 3. I am going to be perfectly honest here and say it is complete jealousy of not having the money to buy it. I have seen countless people absolutely trash the PS3 and then love it once they buy it. It's quite sad really, when it hits mass price hopefully the hate will stop a little more.
Poverty is a awful thing, PS3 doom and gloom stories are from America websites the most, hmmm.....
It really depends on the performance of the gaming division in the next 4 quarters.
If they cannot turn the PS3 to profitability by the 3rd quarter of 2009 then the unthinkable might actually happen.
Sony cannot afford to carry a losing product forever.
Prediction made on 11/1/2008:
Q4 2008: 27M xbox LTD, 20M PS3 LTD . 2009 sales: 11M xbox, 9M PS3
To say it is a possibility does not make you a fanboy just want to put that out there.
I don't think the PS3 will be discontinued but I fully expect to see big changes in the gaming division.
