Forums - Sales - Microsoft say they've sold about 8m in PAL territories

So when sony says install base they mean ship but when MS says it they mean sold through. gotcha

No. When a company, any company, gives us vague numbers with no external 3rd party references (such as GfK, Famitsu, Media Create, NPD or otherwise), we have to assume it's shipped. When a company gives us numbers, citing legitimate 3rd party tracking services, we must assume it's sellthrough data.

thank you for linking me to spin city.

so, how is 8.3 sellthough on 8 million shipped not overtracked at all again.

Because your assuming a lot of things here:

  • Assuming it's shipped, and not sold (press release cited MS estimates via GfK - which means they are estimating sellthrough, and not shipping data - Why cite GfK if your needing shipment data, which you control?)
  • Assuming 8 million means exactly 8,000,000 sold

Your the one spinning the data. The data was being cited as from GfK through Microsoft, and not Microsoft's PR wing alone.

well if it is sellthough that does make it better. Still over tracked, but just marginally (400-500k, not the 700k or so it would be if it were shipped)

Looking at the VGC numbers, it's reporting 8.39 million units for Europe (UK, Spain, Italy, Germany, France, Scandinavia, Other Europe) which would mean it's 'off' by 400,000 units.

However, I wonder (and ioi or another higher up would have to answer this) if the EMEA region = Europe + Other Europe. We may not be comparing apples to apples here, which could cause discrepancies.

That is not an issue because if you read the PR the analyst that has seen the early results specifically says it is over 8 million in the region for install base. That very well could be 8.1, 8.2 8.3 or so.

south africa is why i put it at 400-500k instead of just 400k, I could see SA having at least 100k in sales ltd (at least)

I've just read this news on a french site (jeuxvideo.com), they say that this number include europe+middle east+africa.

I think we should just walk away with two basic agreements here:

1. This number suggests that VGC may have overtracked.

2. VGC should not change their data right now, based on this number.

Wait and see. I personally have always expected VGC to adjust some of their holiday 2008 numbers, especially for Europe/Others, for many consoles and games. There are just way too many factors for VGC to get accurate numbers across the board in Europe/Others.

Hopefully, we'll get year end lists with LTD hardware sellthrough for most of the major countries (UK, France, Spain, Germany, Italy), plus we know we'll have at least WW LTD shipment totals from the console makers.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

Erik - I agree. I've always felt that we need to take a 'wait and see' approach with PAL data, since it's the sketchiest of all data. VGC should not change any of their data until full 2008 numbers (and actual numbers) come in...I believe I had many an argument with Sony fans about this a month ago when the tide was significantly in the 360's favor (it was over that GfK article that MS was up 124% versus VGC saying it was ~180% or something).

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

No big deal, even if there's any overtracking it's probably by a small amount. It looks like the data is well within error margins.

Great job ioi!

My Mario Kart Wii friend code: 2707-1866-0957

It's 8M in EMEA. It excludes regions like China, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and all of South America. I think 1.6M in those regions is possible.
