Try The Slum by Aluisio Azevedo.
Recently I've finished Rose Madder and I have to say that is one of the most underrated books by SK. Great stuff...

No one here has mentioned Hyperion yet? This thread fails. Also, there is three quite nice and thick follow up books.

Good Omen is a must read. Enders game I enjoyed quite a lot as well. American Gods was fun, its follow up (Anansi Boys) not that much.

And lotr books are so much better than the movies.
