Forums - General Discussion - The American form of government: Video of how America is not a Democracy

When was this video made? Before 1989. The elite are the multinational corporations and their capacity to support political systems, nationally and internationally, is quiet obvious. Obama, according to Chomsky, WAS NOT the definition of a unique and inspiring democratic system at all. He was funded by the elite, indirectly through their tacit approval through the media, directly through fund raising and lobbyists in the Democrat party.

Want to know the truth about Iraq. Just look at the companies that made money off it. Halliburton, Blackwater, Exxon Mobil, Shell, etc.

Why is nothing being done about Global Warming. Same deal. You know governments, and their associated business interests, are staking claim on Antarctic soil as we speak.

How about the UN. Insignificant when international corporations, given power through free market economics and groups such as the IMF and WTO, have the real power.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

its kind of hard to define the form of government that a country has, as for example neither the UK or US falll 100% into the category of Democracy or Republic

Well, the UK is not a Republic. The UK, like Japan, Belgium, and other nations, has a monarch as the head of state. Therefore, it cannot be a Republic.

Anyway, I smiled when the narrator offered his view on the political spectrum. He lacks the knowledge of why the political spectrum originated and what left or right truly means. If one understands the origin of these terms and what they indicate, it should be clear that the far-right is not the abscence of government whilst the far-left is total government. The terms originated during the French Revolution. Those who sat on the right wing in the Estates General (the nobility) favored retaining the monarchy and preserving tradition. Those who sat on the left wing, anyone who was not nobility or clergy, were the liberal republicans such as Robespierre. Now, the terms have evolved some and there may be some overlap between what is right-wing and left-wing. Anyway, I agree the US is a republic. It does, however, have a democratic tradition.

According to Thomas Jefferson the U.S. is a Democratic Republic, which was why he and Madison called the party they created the Democratic Republicans. (which eventually became the Democratic party)

The person who made that vid the ignored the facts that didn't fit in with his views.

I agree with Jackson50's assessment of the narrator's view of the political spectrum.

America was always set up as a republic and never as a democracy, a direct democracy can not work with such a high concentration of a population.
