Forums - Gaming - Sony or consumers: who decides PS3 lifespan?

It all really depends on how much Sony is prepared to lose in order to compete. If they're unwilling to have costly price cuts in order to compete they'll very likely end up in third place. How many third place consoles have had 10 year lifespans?

Validating Machine gives you the answer:

:::ZERO THIRD CONSOLES HAD A 10 YEAR LIFESPAN:::

Not even 2nd place consoles had it...

Sony decides the lifespan, not the consumers. It doesn't matter what consumers do, Sony will have their consoles out on the market longer than expected. The system could sell great ( PS2), or it could sell terribly (PS3). This should bolster my point that consumers do not sway Sony in the least. Sony milks something until it's dead.

But if it sells terribly wouldn't the retailers refuse to carry it. I'm sure that would kill it.

If it sell terribly retailers will take less order of ps3 as they will end up taking valuable space that could be use for products that move.

Consumers have chosen Wii and XBox 360 this generation. PS3 will be destined for third place. The 10 year plan is fantasy.

Fixed, Crossed out all the uncalled for remarks.

Both! If it isnt selling it will be pulled by Sony, and if Sony decides not to support it longer consumers cant buy it.

So if consumers stop buying the ps3 tommororo what than? Just hypothetical

Maybe he's saying that Sony will produce PS3's just to have it gaining dust at the production line. Or something similar...

They wont stop the PS3, and the PS3's wont stop selling. The 10 year plan was a response to the people not purchasing the way Kaz Hirai demanded. Especially with the second job talk that Kaz was using. People will get second jobs to pay their bills, not to please Kaz Hirai.

I find your lack of arguments disturbing.
