Forums - Nintendo - nintendo DS: underrated marketshare??

I just noticed something.  The nintendo DS has a continually growing worldwide marketshare.  Last week it took 72.68% of the market in sales while it's lifetime sales put it at 69.3%.  This is despite the fact that there are 2 DS skus and 3 psp skus.

So why are there so many threads dedicated to the Wii's ever-approaching 50% milestone when the DS is nearing 70% and 100 million consoles?  Have people underrated the success of the nintendo DS?

I'm not a fanboy, I just don't enjoy dual analog control.  It's d-pad or wii-mote for me.

the conduit has changed the way wii play games.

I know.  I'm sick of the puns too.

Yes they have. The DS is a fantastic little machine and deserves just as many if not more threads. I think it will hit 70% market share this year, possibly higher, driven by games such as GTA Chinatown wars, the release of the DSi outside japan and hopefully price cuts for the DSLite. If price cuts do the job and DSi is as big as DSLite then maybe 75% is not unreasonable.

I think it is because it was clear a while back (as soon as DS Lite was released) that DS was going to completely destroy PSP in sales. Also as Nintendo has never had any challenger come anywhere close to it in the handheld market it isn't such a big issue.

With the Wii on the other hand 95% of forum users expected it to fail completely. For it to be approaching 50% market share is just unreal.

It's not making the headlines because that was 2 years back.

DS is a nifty, brilliant machine that is selling better then EVERYTHING and has already proven itself worthy of a honorable menion in the gaming history-books!

Because the DS has already completely dominated the PSP, to the point where any arguments in favor of the PSP would be laughable. The PSP pales in comparison with sales, and when it comes to moving software...well, that's fairly self-explanatory. With the home consoles, the HD systems can still move a fair bit of software. Wii fanboys won't feel secure about their system until they have 50% marketshare or more, even if third party efforts are selling on the Wii better than the HD consoles.
