Not at all. It's like new.

You're best bet is to just see if Gamestop will exchange it. Tell them it was a gift and you didn't get a gift receipt. If one Gamestop doesn't let you exchange it, just go to another. You'll eventually find someone that will take it and there are Gamestops all over the place.

I think I might still have the receipt, but I purchased the R2 the day it came out on November 4th. Is it too late for me to change it you think?

If it's more than 30 days don't bother with the receipt. Just say someone gave it to you, they said they got it from Gamestop used, and they didn't give you the receipt. They should just exchange it in store and if they don't, just go to another Gamestop (they take dirty discs to their own facilities and clean them so they don't mind exchanging like that).
If you absolutely cannot find a Gamestop that will exchange the disc, go to Blockbuster and just rent it to make sure the problem isn't your PS3 (if it is your disc, I wouldn't advise exchanging with the Blockbuster disc since they might charge you for it. I don't know how they handle that).
If you get another disc and that still doesn't work, there's a problem with your PS3. Call Sony and hope you're under warranty or else you're out $150 or a PS3.
