The Nielsen Company is best known for tracking television viewership, but its quantifying of what people spend their time doing doesn't end there. It also tracks console usage among its selected households, and, for 2008 (January through October, at least), the PlayStation 2 was played more than any other.

According to Nielsen's findings, PS2 accounted for 31.2% of all console usage minutes measured. Xbox 360 was a distant second with 17.2%, followed by Wii (13.4%), the original Xbox (9.7%), PS3 (7.3%), GameCube (4.6%), and "other" (16.2%). The fact that more hours were spent playing the original Xbox than PS3 is, well, surprising. PS2's dominance isn't; last we checked, there were 87.6 bazillion of them in the world (give or take a few trillion).


Odd how there's still so many people that play the PS2.

That's not odd. The PS2 has a huge library of games and still offers enough games to keep you occupied for years on end. The graphics only look dated to the small groups of critics that populate these forums talking about games instead of enjoying them.

Most people just play a few games and that's it. PS2 is excellent for that.

It's true. I rarely go into somebody's house without seeing a PS2 hooked up to the TV (Gamecubes, Genesis',SNES, and NES's are pretty common too). Seeing a 360 or a PS3 always stops me dead in my tracks! I know the Wii is the most popular console, but I rarely go into a house where there's one hooked up. I guess Wii households call the police less too!

I'd say its true just because there are probably a lot of people who own a PS2 but not a 360, PS3 or Wii. Therefore if they play a game, it would most likely be on the PS2 then.
