Forums - Sony - PS3 games on DVD?

I mean, why not?   I got Prince of Persia for the PS3, and it rocks.  Before my first playthrough, I had to wait for a 2g install to take place.  It was only that one time, but I got to thinking:   If the PS2 could play CD based PS2 games and DVD based PS2 games, can the PS3 play DVD based PS3 games?  I don't know jack about video game programming, but I figure it's possible.  Maybe they'd read off the disc faster too (eliminating the need for installs?)

Nobody but me, eh?

Yes, it's possible technically. Seeing how things like Bioshock, Fallout 3, Gears 2 and GTAIV fit on a single DVD.

But I doubt Sony would allow that, because it would be bad marketing for Bluray. "Hey! We don't need the Bluray! We can make awesome games without needing it!"

CD/DVD/BR is just a diffrent way of storage - it has nothing to do with the way of code interpretation.

So theoretically it's possible.

Sony PR could find a way. Tell us that they are using DVD to save money on the less powerful multi-plat games, and then toss us the Blu-ray discs for PS3 exclusives and heavy hitters like MGS4, Killzone 2, and Final Fantasy XIII. Fanboys may complain, but I just want to cut out install time/space. I played Mercenaries 2 today, and fell asleep during the install. If there's a way to avoid that, give it to me!

I would fall asleep making the coffee!

Here's the thing:

-CD was an established audio and data format before the Saturn and the Playstation used it...
-DVD was an unified video format (no war between the groups) that had already more than 3 years of existence and a lot of acceptance, that before the Playstation 2, the Gamecube and the Xbox used it (even the Dreamcast was about to produce DVD-based games)...

In both cases, Sony was just using a technology that they didn't need to promote because it was already accepted by the companies and the public...

PS3 on the other hand became the motor for helping Blu-Ray win the war against the HD-DVD, and then begin the climbing to be a successful HD format... Of course they can do DVD-based games (if they fit normally) but they won't do that because of the listed above...

Of course, the installs depend more of the developers, Uncharted is an incredible game with really short loading times and it has no installs...

Yeah but, this would mean sony helping themselves out for once, and we all know they are as stubborn as hell

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

I was hard to impress at the time, but Uncharted is a technical miracle. If other developers could pack what Naughty Dog did graphically with Uncharted into their titles (with no installs/ short load times), I would seriously shut the fuck up.
