Forums - Sony - A Sony critic's personal favorite Playstation series and characters.

You can count me as a critic of Sony at this time.  I had been an Atari and Sega fan for awhile watching my companies of choice get crushed under market forces.  This does make one a critic of a given company and rooting for competitors.  Such can also come from fanboys who go gaga over the latest offering and are annoying, or a system is an underdog and you want a competitor to do well.  I do recall the Genesis when the NES was out, and how Thunderforce II blew me away at the time.  Bought the Genesis when I was actually going out to get Baseball Stars for the NES actually.

Well, this being said, I am more of a Sony critic than anything else.  This has gotten fueled by fanboys who mindlessly hype up Sony as king, despite reality saying anything.  It is like when the PS3 was a year away and everyone at a former job I was on was pro-Sony, talking how the PS3 would rule and so on.  I take the standpoint of what would happen, and it did come fairly close.  Anyhow, despite myself being a critic, I do have characters and games on the Playstation that are personal favorites of mine, and felt it best to round things out a bit and discuss them.  I am looking to discuss just Sony's own intellectual properties.  There IS temptation to mention R-Type Final, or Gradius V, but those can't be considered "Sony titles".

Ok, onto the list:

1. Philosoma.  This original Playstation game, with its multiple camera angle facing and shooting.  It still is in my box of PS2 games.  And yes it does look WAY dated now, but it did hold up well for awhile.

2. Dark Cloud.  Particularly Dark Cloud 2 here.  Combine Nethack/Diablo dungeon exploring and map generation with Zelda-like game play, and you get my interest.  I seriously need to pick up Dark Cloud 2 sometime and play it.

3. Ratchet and Clank.  I like the series and bought just about all of them on the PS2.  I am a fan of the Clank character actually, and have it as my PSN avatar picture.

4. Uncharted.  The game just nailed the whole action adventure thing for me, and has graphics that are in the running for the best of this generation.  Nathan Drake is a great "every man" action hero also.  My money, this is the best movie experience offered on the PS3.  It feels like a movie videogame, as opposed to MGS4, which feels like a great SIMULATION of a movie to me.

5. Fantavision.  Go fireworks meets Missile Command.  Ok, I don't like it THAT much, but the sheer unadulterated hatred for it made me bring it up in my memory, and go, "This game needs SOME props".  I commend Sony trying to do something different.

6. Little Big Planet.  Go Sackboy!  I can't believe I almost forgot to list this, considering I want a Sackboy keychain.  I also want to do my Sackboy up as V from V for Vendetta.  I just have some renaissance dude with a gotee holding a frying pan now.  It IS sad.

[Edit, new addition] 7. Motorstorm.  I like the mixed vehicles and off-road mayhem of this series.  Don't want to drop $60 on it.  I am of the believe Motorstorm has impacted the industry some, causing the likes of PGR (I like this series also) to add motorcycles and mix them with cars in some races in the latest PGR.

Other titles I respect, but don't quite fit:

1. Tekken series.  I like the series.  Considering it jumps to the 360 this time around, it isn't a Playstation exclusive.

2. Gran Turismo.  I like driving games, and Gran Turismo deserves its props.  However, I am not THAT big of a driving fan, so it doesn't make my first cut.  The sheer number of cars it tried to bring into videogames broke the mold.

3. Katamari series.  Jumped to the 360, so no longer fits here.

4. Dynasty Warriors series.  The original one on the PS2 happened to get me seriously interested in the PS2.  Now it is all over the place.

5. ICO and Shadow of the Collosus.  I can't say I ever got into either of these, but I do respect them for trying to be games as art.  Because I didn't quite get into them, that is why they aren't above.

Ok, like where is Metal Gear?  Never got into this.  I actually am more fond of the ORIGINAL Metal Gear on the NES, with the typos and everything.  Plus, you guys WAY overhype the series.  And GTA?  Well, I am not into doing gangster things at all.  A life of crime and mayhem doesn't appeal to me, unless it is like Crackdown where I have a license to do mayhem.

Around the Network

As a Metal Gear fan, I must say that the first two Metal Gears were actually released on MSX2. The NES version of the first game was only a port, apparently a bad albeit not a terrible one.

That's all I have to say at the moment I suppose. Yeah, not much and even less important but I just felt like having to say it.

Ever played Jak & Daxter? Very similar to Ratchet & Clank, and my preference between the two. Made by the developers of Uncharted, Naughty Dog.

Familar with J&D.  I tried to get into the GTA inspired one they did, but it didn't register with me, and I never got into it.  I got into R&C because of the weapon mix they had, and then I ended up really liking Clank.

I added Motorstorm to my original entry. I knew one slipped my mind.
