What percentage of 360/PS3 games actually run at 1080p??

720p would be more then enough for the Wii 2

Most PS3/360 games don't even run at at 720p without upscaling! Resolution is really over-rated. Frame-rate is much more important

Native 720p at 60 fps would be great for the next-gen. My TV doesn't go higher than 720p anyway.

You're completely wrong, 720p is the rule and anything above or below that would be the exceptions.

OK I admit it's been a while since I looked at the native resolutions list so I had forgotten a lot about it. Part of it is also that I fell prey to the fact that the most publicized resolutions are the ones which fall short of 720p.

However, my comment about frame-rates still applies. I would actually prefer worse resolution with better and more stable framerate on my 360 games.

No sweat.

60FPS is excellent, but unfortunately most people don't notice it much unless the game dips to 15-20 fps lows. Though on the other hand it could be why COD IV sold so well because people appreciated the fact it ran so well without necessarily understanding why.

I would have to admit that I would prefer 1080P but it doesnt matter if it's 480P again...I will still buy it! Still 1080 P games with a Wiimote would be sweet on my HDTV!

Wii - 3810 4459 0841 8442 - (Message me to add me)

360 - LuminalACE

PS3 - AUS-ACE

Let's see what the HDTV market is in a few years. That will likely influence Nintendo more than fanboys claiming they won't accept anything less than an arbitrary number.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

So will the PS4 and the 720 be 3080p by that time?

Many genres are OK at 30 fps, but some really require 60 fps to feel good. Especially racing games and fast-paced games like the Ninja Gaiden series. Mario Kart Wii at online splitscreen sucks somewhat as it doesn't run at 60 fps.

But as you say, a stable framerate is really very important. The lack of it in many games is one of my pet peeves with the 360 (and the PS3 doesn't seem better from what I hear). Props to Nintendo for making their games in mostly stable 60 fps, at least the ones I have played. It's a whole other level of smoothness.

I expect something of similar power to the current 360/PS3, but it's going to require HD outputs of some sort to get 720p so a game developer could make a game 1080p if they wanted to and didn't need the processing power for other things.
I'd rather they had extra RAM with 720p than try to advertise a 1080p standard but not include enough memory like the PS3 has done to be able to utilise it.

So in summary 1080p would be nice, but I don't really see it happening. I expect the PS4/720 to have the 1080p as standard as there are maybe a handful of games that can run that resolution natively, the only one I can think of is GT5.

Never argue with idiots
They bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience

by then the PS4 will have 8230p resolution

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

I think they set out to do what they wanted to with the Wii and their statement was made.

So overall it could really go both ways. 1. ...gotta work

I am personally interested in whatever technology they use to reach their performance and packaging requirements. The technology and design of the Wii HD will be interesting because above all else it must be power efficient. Theres the fact that they will probably need to use a conventional architecture for the GPU for the first time and that makes me wonder if they will use something like an all AMD system with what is essentially a tweaked laptop CPU+GPU combination.

Its unfortunate that car journalists will give a 10 page brief to some me-too sports car but barely spend 3 pages on the technology inside the most important car in the world, the Corolla where 100x the people will buy and use the vehicle. In a way Nintendo is following the lead of other Japanese companies in that real people, your typical every day people are important to them and you can see it in the care they put into their "boring" car ranges.

I believe Nintendo has renewed their contract with IBM and ATI, and if i had to make a bet, the Wii HD is going to be very similar to the Xbox 360 in terms of architecture (multicore PowerPC based CPU), if slightly more powerful (same CPU clock, say, but with 1 GB of RAM instead of 512 MB)

If you want to see the future of Nintendo consoles, though, look at the DSi. I've said that the DSi is a "half-generation upgrade," and thus is a rare glimpse into how Nintendo plans to upgrade their "disruptor" generation of platforms
