Final Fantasy and Dragon's Quest.
Square and Enix were my two favorite developers... until they merged oddly.

Oh, right. I thought they started with VII.

No. VII was still under Square. Hence why 1987 seems to fit. Since you seen to be using SE as just Square in your remark.
Unless you mean you thought Final Fantasy VII was the first Final Fantasy game... In which case... no.
Final Fantasy 1 was the game that saved the company.
While Dragon Quest was the game that made RPGs what they are today... made over at Enix.

It says a lot about the state of FF fandom when it took me a moment to realize you were joking.
FFXIIIv runs on Crystal Tools, which runs on all current-gen systems. It already can run on the Wii. It won't be as pretty, but I see it happening.

Back in the day... up until about 2003.
Square and Enix were two different companies.
Around 2003, Square took a big hit and needed help... so they tried to merge with Enix. Enix was hesistant to do it... since they were financially usntable... but went through with it after Sony stabalized Square by buying a bunch of stock and stablizing the company.
Enix was actually worth a bit more then Square at the time of merger.
The main differences before that were....
Square was like your average development company, except you know... abnormally talented.
They almost went out of buisness until FF1 saved them from bankrupcy, then they made a number of classics.
Enix worked differently, they were more a publishing company who owned IPS. They'd take the best small developers they could find and get them to make games for them... and also publsih games made by developers that they thought would sell well.
Hence why games like Dragon Quest are still made by other developers.
Dragon Quest basically set down what JRPGs are.
Most things in JRPGs can still be traced back to Dragon Quest... or as we knew it Dragon Warrior.
Enix was kinda like Atlus... but bigger. They also did other stuff... and still do. Like publish Magna. Popular US titles include Full Metal Alchemist and Soul Eater.
Of course this is overlooking numerous numberous awesome games Square made and Enix Published before their mergers... like the Ogre Battle series for one.
