It always seems that with Mario/Zelda, the games have reception that are similiar but not limited to this.
First Game: Revolutionary, very well received, marked a change in the genre, generates a strong fanbase, several consider it the best game in the series.
Following games: Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Second Game: An prominent change in the formula, generally not well received by fans of the first game, some say that they're better than the other 3 but most regarded them as the worst games in their respective series.
Following Games: Super Mario Bros. 2, The Adventures of Link, Super Mario Sunshine, (EDIT)The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Third Game: The game that brings back the traditional formula of the first game, about the same number of fans say this game is the best game in the series as those who say the first game is the best of the three, most deem it a great game.
Following Games: Super Mario Bros. 3, A Link to the Past, Super Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess
The bolded don't follow the trend as closely as the other 3 games that proceed it but I regarded to follow the pattern regardless.
Maybe it's just me.
Pixel Art can be fun.
