Forums - Sales - More games have higher penetration levels on Xbox 360, PS3

The best selling system always has the lowest penetration levels for its games, because the biggest userbase is always the most diverse userbase.

The PS2 didn't have a single game with a 25% penetration level.

While all 3 7th gen consoles have 9 games with a 10% penetration level, the PS2 only has 3.

Why should we care about this now?
What if say they packed in the same game with every PS2 sold from launch?

Then they'd have 1 game that could break 25%.  Wii has 4, and one costs $90 during a global financial crisis.

We can spin it back and forth by picking random percentage points to be our goalpost, but at the end of the generation these numbers will always favor the smaller userbases and still mean absolutely nothing.

I actually expected this to be the other way -- with the Wii having more games with a higher penetration level when I first started the analysis.

It also says a lot about relative vs. absolute goal posts. It is harder to have a 5% seller or 10% seller on a 43M install base because you must have more sales to reach those levels.

What this does show is that games may be destined to sell at a certain level regardless of install base. (I am thinking here of mid-level games, movie tie-ins, and the like).

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.
