Forums - Gaming - game of the year 2008

Clearly my opinion of Gears of War 2 is invalid despite having completed the game due to not owning the hardware. God forbid that I can formulate an opinion on Spore after a good 25+ hours of gametime. My opinion on the games in question is as valid as anybody else's and I listed them because I have enough expirence with them to judge them. If I had not, then I would not have listed them at all. Drop some of the paranoia and do not treat people like fanboys, it's insulting. In my opinion LittleBigPlanet is easily the best game this year and it has nothing to do with the gaming platform that I currently own. Please, do not assume so much about others, I spend more time gaming in other people's households then my own.

It has nothing to do with whether you are a PS3 fanboy or not, but whether you have enough experience to make any valid judgement on them, which is unlikely when you do not own any of the platforms. I play tons of games at other people's houses.  God knows how much time I've devoted to Rock Band, a game I've never owned, but that doesn't mean I should be reviewing it, or deciding on its qualifications as a game.  Also, not owning a platform means you get much less exposure to its lower profile great games, like Valkyria on PS3, The World Ends With You on DS, World of Goo on Wii, Tales of Vesperia on 360, or Patapon on PSP.  Games like these often end up GotY candidates as well (other than the last 2 I consider all of those to be GotY candidates).

I agree, LBP and MGS4 were the best games this year.  But there were so many other great games that it's silly to say nothing else even deserves a mention.

Well of the titles I played its definitely No More Heroes followed by Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

But speaking overall, it's between MGS4, TWEWY, LBP, and No More Heroes. I can't even begin to choose haha. If any of those won I'm content.

@naznatips

Perhaps I chose my words poorly, I should have said that I think that LittleBigPlanet is clearly my GOTY while MGS4 would clearly be the runner up. Other titles such as Gears of War 2 and Left4Dead are in the same league but I would not consider them to be as good as MGS4 so that makes my GOTY decision a fairly easy one, unlike many previous years. I still don't think that owning a platform is really all that important when judging the quality of its titles, at least not when it's another HD system where the differences are relatively marginal.

I didn't get a shot at LBP this year.

So, by default, I think Gears 2 will have to get the nod. I loved the single player campaign and while I think the MP has taken a step back in some regards from the first when it launched, it's still damned good.

Honorable mentions go to MGS4 and Fallout 3, two titles that had their faults but actually won me over (mostly) by the end.

Worst game goes to Wii Music. Good God. I spent a few hours with that "game" over Christmas and it irritated me to no end. That was probably magnified due to my having played loads of Rock Band with my nieces just minutes before I loaded that piece of shit into the Wii. Put the two games next to each other and Wii Music looks even worse. And don't pull that "casual" bullshit on me... Rock Band is pretty damned casual on its lower settings. My 8 year old niece was rocking the drums within minutes and beat almost every song put in front of her on easy.

PS. I still haven't bought Braid either. From the sounds of it, that game is right up my alley. I'll get around to it one of these days.

if counting by the hours, Brawl would win by miles... well... hours.

Wii games like Kart and Brawl are excellent though not much more then their Gamcube predecessors and no that's not an insult at all.

Game of the year for me is Metal Gear Solid 4 followed by Resitance 2, Fallout 3 and GTA 4.

Metal Gear Solid 4 / Senjou no Valkyria...

My choice is a little game I doubt anyone will mention, it's not too well known and hasn't had a lot of hype. My choice is Metal Gear Solid 4.

Metal gear solid 4, a game i waited 3 years to play, and it was worth the wait

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

NHL 09, best online and offline. Brawl shouldn't even be in here. That game is so boring.
