Forums - Microsoft - Price cut to $150 Arcade, $225 Premium, $300 Elite next year?

MS will sooner or later cut price, but for low end model still has the price cut card available to play only two times (maybe three, making smaller than $50 cuts, but they would be less effective), so it will play it as wisely as possible.

Edit: having both now resisted with higher prices, one paying the price, the other not suffering at all, Sony and Nintendo could try to lure MS into wasting a price cut.

They have a lot of different price points they can reach. Theres also the option of increasing the HDD space/adding wireless to add value to the premium SKU instead of directly cutting the price.

Arcade: $200 -> $180 -> $150 -> $125 -> $100

Premium $300 -> $250 -> Add Wireless -> $225/$200

I agree, they could do so, but this game is playable by Sony and Nintendo too and they'd have more moves available anyway. Given its higher costs, Sony could be quite happy of a $20-30 instead of $50-100 rebate race.

If being the cheapest Arcade were the best selling too, it would be in a much stronger position, but as things stand, it has spent more possible moves than competitors without reaching 1st position.

I don't expect a price cut for the 360 at all in 2009, they know that Sony will struggle to offer anything more than a $50 cut on the PS3 and I think they know that they've already developed a solid reputation in the market now.

From this point on I can see them releasing the Slim in August/Sept and with that new SKU may offer something like built in wireless or SSD storage. I think Microsoft know they are at the right price point now and now they only need to add value to the package instead of directly cutting the price.

However, if they drop the price at the same time as the Slim due to reduced manufacturing costs, then I'll be very happy as I'm not going to buy a 360 til the Slim comes out.

There is no point.
After PS3 will reach 299$ price, there will be no point to compete for M$. PS3 will dominate x360.
See price wars for PS2/GC/xbox.
After reaching mass market price(299$ and less), it won`t matter anymore.

2009.04.30 - PS3 will OUTSELL x360 atleast by the middle of 2010. Japan+Europe > NA.

Gran Turismo 3 - 1,06 mln. in 3 weeks with around 4 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Gran Turismo 4 - 1,16 mln. with 18 mln. PS2 on the launch.

Final Fantasy X - around 2 mln. with 5 mln. PS2 on the launch.

1.8 mln. PS3 today(2008.01.17) in Japan. Now(2009.04.30) 3.16 mln. PS3 were sold in Japan.
PS3 will reach 4 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 25k.

PS3 may reach 5 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 50k.
PS2 2001 vs PS3 2008 sales numbers =) + New games released in Japan by 2009 that passed 100k so far

Not sure why I'm going to bother, but PS3 is highly unlikely to be $299 until 2010

Plus $199 is mass market price, not $299

I think there won't be a price cut until either PS3 starts catching up in sales or PS3 gets a huge price cut.

Right.  It won't be until Sony drops the price of the PS3 that Microsoft does the same for the 360.  The 360 will always be cheaper than the PS3 and, as the two systems will continue having the essentially the same software save for 1st/2nd party exclusives, the PS3 will never catch up to the 360 - Microsoft will always be one step ahead for the rest of the gen.

$249 is mass market price, not $299

The Wii is at mass market price and it is only $249 which is the new $199.

Arcade X360 is priced at $199 which is $50 cheaper than mass market price of $249.

Who knows...it depends on how sales for the 360 looks in 2009's 1st half.

I agree that there will be a price cut for the PS3 in 2009, but I believe it will only be $50 to take it down to $349

Plus the Wii is an exception to the rule, or at least it's making its own rules. Nintendo originally aimed to launch the console for $199 because they know that it is the industry accepted mass market price. Just like how Microsoft wanted to get the Arcade down to $199 given that historically 75% of console sales are below $200.
