Forums - Microsoft - Cry On canceled!!!

Ok, Lost Odyssey is a great game, but can people that call it the best JRPG of this gen so far please buy a DS.

And I don't know if Fire Emblem counts as a JRPG (it is turn based) but that one's better then LO.

@BengaBenga

Sorry but Fire Emblem is a Strategy RPG. Not a JRPG, so to point out Lost Odyssey is the better RPG.

Fire Emblem just isn't user-friendly or pick-up and play. That's why I just couldn't get into those games.

Obviously a lot of posters here neglected to do a little research. Mistwalker is not a large developer, and works in concert with other developers that do most of the drudge work. Most of their work is based around design, story, score, and layout. Apparently they were not financing the title, or were they doing the serious coding. Yes it is a loss that they will not have another title to their credit. However its in no way shape or form a serious blow.

Microsoft was so serious about supporting Mistwalker which is basically a second party developer that they even created a developer to do so in Feel Plus. Which as you can see was not involved in Cry On. Further more Microsoft has gotten serious mileage out of Mistwalker in its ancillary effect in the local market. Novels, Anime, Manga, and so forth.

Mistwalker were already in the design phase for Blue Dragon 2 before the first title in the series was released, and it is safe to assume that the same probably held true for Lost Odyssey. The only question for me is what Mistwalker got themselves into when Cry On was shelved. They seem to have a penchant for having three plates spinning at all times.

There is a lot of overreaching in this thread, and I have little doubt that a lot of posters are going to have to eat serious crow before all is said and done. Microsoft is going nowhere, and neither is Mistwalker. Losing a competent second party developer that gives you excellent market penetration, and dominance is not something that is done lightly. As long as Microsoft has Mistwalker they have the ultimate ace in the hole. A exclusive JRPG developer that seriously delivers.

@Dodece

I don't believe the relationship between Microsoft and Mistwalker is finished and I agree some people think that they are about to hit black hole. Mistwalker is good in business, I don't think it was just financially but had to do with the game itself.

Cry On never had any press release information let alone screenshots or previews or not even a showing at TGS.

I can see why they canceled this game and I hope they have plans for a Blue Dragon 2 and Lost Odyssey 2.

Sorry, LO is the best JRPG this gen. You are just wrong with your opinion!

Cancelled projects are always bad news...

Anyways; while Blue Dragon was somewhat controversial and performed poorly, Lost Odissey is a genuinely good game and sales were good - at over 800k sales it's still the best selling jrpg this gen for home consoles.

It's a shame, tho. I hope they get the greenlight from Microsoft for either BD2 or LO2.

Do you see the irony here? Maybe it should be phrased better :p.

On topic: This was pretty much expected to be vapourware a while back, but its sad to hear it confirmed though.

With regards to JRPG, the large majority of the good ones are on the handheld this gen with the PS2 stealing a golden goose in Persona.

Lost Odyssey is my second favourite JRPG this gen on a home console so far, and my favourite pure JRPG (top spot goes to Valkyria Chronicles which is a S-JRPG).

It happens

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

They released two games on the DS after Lost Odissey and just announced the third. On top of ASH, the count so far are two 360 games and four DS games.
