Forums - Microsoft - Xbox Arcade worth it?

It seems your favorite game types includes RPGs and Shooters.  You can do some research on what's good score wise on metacritics.com or gamerankings.com.   But here's are some of the things are I heard people really like on the 360.

360 Hybrid:  Action Adventure, RPG, Shooter,  Sandbox

  • Grand Theft Auto IV   (also on PC, however big exclusive download episodes are only on 360)
  • Prince of Persia (the most visually striking of the series, reviewers knocked this for low difficulty that catter more toward the casual gaming crowd, but don't let this discourage you)
  • Crack Down (by the team head by one of the creators of the GTA series)
  • Dead Rising (A surprise hit by Capcom, something different and fun)
  • Fall Out 3 (you already have this on PC, download episodes are coming to 360 only)
  • Assasin Creed (featuring a cool female producer, this really is an awesome looking game, sells more than 4millions on 360 alone, but love it or hate it gameplay)
  • Devil May Cry 4   (more Capcom goodness)
  • Saint Row 1 & 2  (A good alternative to GTAIV)

360 RPGs

  • Oblivion  (also on PC)
  • Mass Effect (also on PC)
  • Lost Odyssey (from the creator of Final Fantasy series )
  • Fable II  (Peter Molyneux's team pour their heart and soul into this)
  • Tales of Vesperia

360 Shooters

  • Halo 3  (~ 9 millions sold.  There are at least a few millions people happy with their purchase in this pool)
  • Gears 1 & 2 (You are getting this any way)
  • Far Cry 2 (Breath taking open world graphics that far surpasses Far Cry 1)
  • Call of Duty 4  (Regarded by many as the best shooter ever made, single player a little on the short side, also on PC)
  • Left 4 Dead (the surprise hit by Valve)
  • Bioshock (also on PC, people can't wait for Bio2 to come out.  Hopefully the sequel won't take 4 years like the original )
  • The Tom Clancy Series (UBI Soft know how to make great shooters and this is their bread and butter franchise)
  • Lost Planet  (one of the first Capcom shooter for the 360)

360 Live Arcade

Don't forget to check out a bunch of good games on here.

Thanks for all the suggestions!
Though for most of the games, I don't see myself buying because I have most of them on pc. The ones I'd really consider is Gears, Tales and Dead Rising... And maybe Halo....

Yeah, I finally have a sig.

If you're into downloading alot, like Rock Band songs and stuff then the harddrive is a must. I would get the Arcade and then quietly start looking for at least a 20 GB drive.

Yep, and you can get a 20gb HD for about $30 on eBay as well... so that's not too bad.

If you get an arcade, just pick up a cheap 20gb HDD. You're not going to regret spending the extra $30, trust me.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

Yeahhh, that's what I'll probably end up doing. I'm sad that I missed the walmart boxing day sale where they had a pro bundle for $240... Just did NOT have the cash after the holiday shopping.

Yeah, I finally have a sig.

Here's where it comes down.

All discs are playable on the Arcade. The Arcade comes with 256MB memory (older models with a memory card, whilst it's internal memory on newer models, I believe). With that said, you can download a couple XBLA titles and still be alright.

Additionally, if you buy an Arcade, you can apply on Xbox.com to get either a free (additional) 256MB memory card, or a $20 20GB HDD (you'll only be able to use 13.3GB of this, though).

With 512MB space, you can do a lot of things. That's enough space to have a good number of downloadable games (especially if they're older, cheaper titles). That's enough space to own Duke Nukem 3D, Soul Calibur, Centipede & Millipede, Hexic HD, TMNT (1989 Arcade), Galaga, and a number of other games. Trust me, I know - I just upgraded to a larger HDD and it took me all of two memory card swaps to move over all my XBLA titles.

However, with 512MB, you CANNOT install any titles. You pretty much can't take advantage of a variety of the Xbox's abilities - namely media storage and game installations.

With a 20GB HDD, you can install one, MAYBE two games. Installing games more-or-less means that they load much faster, and they don't require the disc to be spinning to run (so your DVD-ROM doesn't get worn out, and you don't have to listen to the rocketship taking off, etc). Pretty much, installing games is a wonderful feature to have, and I recommend it to everybody. I suggest to ALL players to have a hard drive so they can install games. And if you're the kind of guy that doesn't need to be playing a variety of games with your system, then a 20GB will be plenty for you.

However, I discovered that being restricted so much with what I can install is annoying. I play Left 4 Dead, GTA IV, SoulCal IV, and the Orange Box a lot (as well as a bunch of my other games on occasion, too). That's four games - too much to install on a 20GB drive. I upgraded to a 60GB, and now I can install at least seven titles to the hard drive without crowding myself on space. Perfect!

In summary:
-Go with an Arcade with the free extra memory upgrade if you don't care about load times and don't expect to need any space for media or many downloads.

-Go with an Arcade with the $20 20GB HDD if you do care about load times, but only expect to play one or two games the majority of the time and don't need to install a lot of games. Also, if you plan on needing SOME space for media but not much, this is acceptable.

-Go with a Pro (titled just "Xbox 360" on the box) with a 60GB HDD included or Elite model with a 120GB HDD included if you care about load times and expect to go beyond one or two games on a regular basis. These will allow you to have plenty of space to install a variety of games, while still having a lot of space for media and downloads as well.

With the pricing of the 60GB HDD kit it is easy to start with an Arcade then get a HDD when you feel you need one.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

So I was actually contemplating getting a 2nd console to supplement my Wii now that I have an HDTV. I've further decided that I will go with a 360 since I did not appreciate Sony removing backwards compatibility, a giant plus in my books. It's too bad since I was considering bluray, but I also can't support Sony's format because of their arrogance this time around.

So I was wondering, is it worth getting an xbxo 360 Arcade?

It is cheaper, but how useful is the harddrive anyways? Does anyone who owns it have any major gripes about it?

Okay, if you want backwards compatibility with the 360 to play the original Xbox games then you will need a HDD. Even if you don't wan the actual original Xbox games on the disc. Microsoft put the best selling Xbox games of last generation on Xbox Live Marketplace and you can download them to your HDD. So if you want to take of advantage of the B/C on the Xbox 360. The 20GB (refurb from Microsoft's site for $20), 60GB HDD( comes with 3 free months of Xbox Live and Headset) or the 120GB HDD.

All are decent in price I guess. But the Arcade is decent if all you want to do is play Xbox 360 games, but considering DLC is beginning to take its course in the next coming months. A HDD is required soon. So if you just want a Xbox 360 now, just fork up the $200 and pay for the HDD later when you actually need it. If you need a HDD now then go for the 60GB Xbox 360 SKU. It is priced at $300.

It can actually be best to do that, because you end up having an extra 256MB storage space. It's more troublesome, though, and I'd recommend not doing so if you think from the get-go that you'll be wanting the hard drive.

For gods sake get the pro. It gives you the ability to get DLC and download XBLA games. You're missing out if you pick up the arcade.
