Forums - Gaming - Light gun gaming on the Wii (V2)

When namco released time crisis 4 for the Ps3 it pretty much went no where, as soon as i saw the light-gun controller had 6 buttons, 2 thumbsticks and had a cord i decided not to buy it since i hate overly complex controls, and cables i was dissapointed about the low quality of the product.

But thanks to the Wii light gun gaming is more alive than ever and and personally i love these types of games there are heaps of titles which feature Wii Zapper support. Link's Crossbow Training , The House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return , The House of the Dead: Overkill , Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles , Nerf N-Strike , Target: Terror , Wild Gunman (2008), Wild West Guns , Ghost Squad , Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 , Call of Duty: World at War , Quantum of Solace(soon ?)

Wii allready has more games of this type than the PS2 accumulated over the entire life of the system !. The X360 has zero games of this type and the Ps3 has only 1 with a poorly designed and overly complex peripheral.

As the Wii Mote is a standard peripheral, publishers of light gun games have the perfect platform. Wii has the right hardware the most software and a huge install base so the other platforms including even the PC dont even come close to the Wii in this respect.

Accuracy the IR sensing on the Wii can be precise - set up correctly it will provide line of sight aiming with no cursor required (this is how a light gun game should be played). There are several wiimote housing available which provide a pistol grip for light-gun games (ie Wii Zapper).

Crap. I just remembered I have Umbrella Chronicles but never played it.

I promise I'll play this weekend, LOL.

House of the dead 2&3 is a great party game. People taking turn shooting up zombies. Looking forward to Overkill.

I got both the Link's shell and the perfectshot shell.
People saying perfectshot shell is accurate but to me, it seems I have to point it slightly below with my aim.
The Link's shell seems more accurate since the extra length stabilized against your arm or by holding with other hand.

Of course, you could also stabilize the perfectshot shell with 2 hands, feels more natural with the handgun-ish.

Yep the prefect shot design is a better shape than the Wii zapper.
For rapid fire aiming a two hand grip is the way to properly aim or fire a pistol accuralty as you have found - even a plastic light gun - use both eyes and center the pistol between them equally - do not use the sights it's too slow, just look over the top of the slide and go with instinct.
Using one hand results in overswing and longer recovery between shots, inaccuracy , or is simply to slow to aim with just one hand ,the trigger pressure will pull the shot off target.
A PS2 style controller with an IR light pickup would also be quite effective - by default they require a 2 hands grip.

Would really like to see Vampire Night , End-game and Virtua Cop come out for the Wii, and probably plenty of fans of the Time-crisis series would like it on the Wii.
Now that the old CRT TV's are gone you can't really play the old scan pickup type games anymore - and a Big LCD or projection is better anyway so the Wii could really help bring alot of these earlier titles back to a new audience.

I love them too. XD

Yeah, I'd like to see more "casual" lightgun titles where youngster can play.
These are really great party games where anyone could pick up and play. There's only 1 button you need to worry about :)

Also Wild West Guns for WiiWare. Though it does have a cursor.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

Well Nerf N-Strike seems to be a hot item for Christmas. It gets special shelving attention at Target, Gamestop and Toys R Us, and I've seen people picking them up and asking for them constantly while I shop. I wonder if sales will reflect this anecdotal evidence I speak.

Yeah, I probably pick up Nerf at some point for the "kiddies". All these games are killing my gaming budget even though I usually buy them at half price :(

Well I do hope that after great sales of HotD: Overkill Sega will make new Virtua Cop game, or maybe remake the old ones for the Wii.

Yep if they do re-release the virtua cop series on the Wii i will be very interested - the reason i never got a PS2 was because the guncon does not work on DLP projection's or LCD's and playing these games on anything smaller than an 70cm TV is just to small.
Even when i did use a large TV setup it was quite common to have blind spots near the edges where the guncon did not work due to reflections or focus issues.
The way the WiiMote sensing works avoids all the problem issues of the old light-guns and gives far better accuracy.

Skeet Surfing (this is from the movie top secret)

With the aid of the Wii balance board and WiiMote the fantastic sport of skeet surfing could actually take off in a big way - imagine being able to compete against you mates online or offline simultaneously surfing the balance board and spraying Lead shot around with careless abandon.
In computer land the waves never end, the ammo never stops flowing and your friends can come back to life after you accidentally blast them or a shark eats them
Wii has more scope for innovation and game possibilities than any of it's rivals. Bring on the skeet surfing anytime
