Yeah, the stuff about a woman being unclean while she menstruates in the first couple books of the Bible is fucking hillarious. Not even the Jews by into that stuff, and they follow the Old Testament much more strictly.

Actually, Jews do "buy into this stuff".  Observant Jews (aka, Orthodox Jews) actually do observe the different mitzvot concerning women purifying in the mikvah after a woman menstruates... so while the average non-observant Jew may not care for following the 613 mitzvot, observant Jews take the laws of Torah very literally and seriously.

Really? That's fucking nuts. Do they do that thing I mentioned with the religious intolerance and the swords?

@appolose

What do you mean by "converts"?

If the above mentioned peoples become Christians, then they're not considered adulterers and so forth (or so, according to my own theology).  Even better for them if Calvinism is true (which, I must say, is not).

So then it wouldn't matter if someone is gay as long as they converted to a christian? It's on the list too.

The two are somewhat exclusive; that is, upon conversion, when someone really decides to believe and submit to God (sorry, that probably sounded annoying (no sarcasm)), one would also decide to, er, stop being gay.  In other words, sinning after being saved does not automatically unsave a person; as long as that person is, at least, resisting or fighting against sinful urges, they're not considered, in this case, a homosexual.

@pastro

Well, I didn't say the Bible was right, just what it actually said.

How does one stop being gay? Physical actions? That doesn't necessarily take away from the persons preference. It tends to lead to extreme repression that may or may not eventually surface. It's better for a homosexual to be out and comfortable, then a 40 year old sexually confused infidel. x.o

My point is, one can sin and still not be considered a sinner.  In any event, preferences can be resisted.

I understand, your post seemed like you thought I was trying to say the bible didn't condemn homosexuality.

Really, it condemns everybody in one way or another. It was written to make us feel guilty and ask/tithe for forgiveness.

I see.

Yes, it does condemn everyone.  But that's where salvation is supposed to come in.

@Tovya

The Bible does teach that the righteous will see God, and that the unrighteous will indeed be thrown into Hell (annihilation or eternal torment, take your pick).  Jesus also, for example, mentioned (hyperbole (in a way)) cutting off your hand so you might not sin yourself into Hell.  So the Bible does very much teach Heaven and Hell.

C'mon, how can people still "believe" in the bible in 2008??? I really, really don't understand that. We deserve better than that book full of ...

OKokok, one more thing before I go.

Philisophically speaking, believing the Bible is no more absurd than taking any other position.

Yes it's more absurd than taking other position :s The book is full of lies, hate, ... It was a perfect way to put people under the Church domination. I can't wait for the day when scientists will discover life somewhere else, and so we'll finally get rid of "that".

Really? Would you care to prove that with some philosophical speaking?

It is; one must start with an unprovable assumption.

And what will discovering life somewhere else do?  The Bible may not exclude the possibility of alien life, if that's what you're referring to.

Easy ... "The Bible may not exclude the possibility of alien life" ... The bible talks about the creation of life on earth, nowhere else.

We have scientific proofs that most of the things that are said in the bible are wrong. Saying the world's been created by god is a lie, saying man kind's been created by god is a lie, all the stuff about Marie being a virgin ... Guess what? Lie (scientific proof: jesus blood is AB type).

HAHA! What? Come again? I need links for this.
