More importantly make sure the TV runs at 1080p and was made by either Samsung or a Japanese company.

Why is that?

I'm planning to get a Philips with a 2ms responce time.

Oh, Phillips are great to so no worries. I just said that because its a well known fact that you cant go wrong with a Japanese TV (Panasonic, Sony, Pioneer, JVC, Toshiba, Hitachi etc). But you also cant go wrong with Samsung and Phillips.

I can vouch for that... I have owned a sony for 20 yrs (no issues), sharp for 3 months (died) and now samsung for 2 yrs (read that Samsung uses sony parts, but make better LCD HDTVs - I cant see the difference though)

Hz is related to the TV's refresh rate, More hz = better for fast moving images. It really won't have so much impact on live TV as the method of filming is a limiting factor.

Tube Tv's have a refresh rate, it's just not advertised. Current LCD TV's can hit up to 120hz there should be no detriment to your picture especially while playing computer generated inputs(games PC etc.)

I'd actually pay more attention to these factors: Dynamic Contrast Ratio, Contrast Ratio, Brightness rating, Backlight type, and Response time.

Bingo, good post. your Contrast Ratio, Brightness rating,Backlight type, Response time. (what he said) that makes for your good gaming experience.

Yep, i'm a girl

BTW , I don't know if the TV your looking at has 1080p or not but if it doesn't it's not a very big deal. Unless you're buying a massive TV 50"+ than you will probably not be able to tell the difference between 1080p and 720p.

hey i'm looking at a 42" 1080p Vizio that has really good stats and is really highly rated on every web site i check it on. anyone know anything about it?

^^I gotta admit that I never heard of Vizio...

I think mostly because samsung is regarded as one of the best developers of LCD

Samsung, Sony, and Sharp tend to have good pictures. Of the tv's we sell Samsung and sony have amazing pictures. RCA is often lacking in terms of quality. i don't recall any phillips of the top of my head in terms of quality.

WE sell those. I have had one in my living room and it looks great. Not the best of the bunch but still respectable.
