Okay... so, where is the article that states this? Everyone is either celebrating or crying over an event that no one has even shown to be fact yet...

It all started with rumors from the blog Mini-Microsoft. (everyone knows blog rumors are always true!)

The rumor has come from other sources as well.

The layoff bug about to hit Microsoft?

The software giant has thus far avoided the layoffs that some of its competitors have had to succumb to in the rough economic climate, but that’s about to change, according to the blog Mini-Microsoft. They’re hearing January 15 could be the day it goes down, and we have a seperate source hearing the same thing. On that day the bottom “10 percent-ers” (presumably, those performing the worst) could be gone — as many as 5,000 to 10,000 employees. Damn.

Ah, well that's better.

I was only saying that because, around here, with the fanboyism, we often get threads of "rumors" started that are simply made up in the thread poster's mind... so people start to panic or celebrate over nothing.

MS is doomed!

Seriously, it can't keep up losing money all the time like it has been doing. Looks like only Nintendo is the only company which might even survive through this gen. :)

I assume you're referring to Microsoft's entertainment division. Even then you're still wrong, as they've been profitable lately.

Someone explain how the weakening dollar actually helps MS? Also, I thought MS wasn't affected by the recession?

Weakening dollar means other currencies are worth more in dollars. Since Microsoft very likely has more revenue than expenses abroad, this means their revenue should be increasing faster than their expenses.

Practically every company is getting negatively affected by the recession. With companies going bankrupt and downsizing, less PCs are needed and therefore less software purchases. Companies are also trying to save money, which will also mean delays or cancellations of XP->Vista upgrades, for example.

Well, this last one could help economy (MS excepted) during better times too!

Weird, they are posting great results. Have they revised the forecast yet?

They revised their Q2 forcast down in October, and are expected to miss their lowered estimates.  This is due the the declining PC market, along with the current worldwide economic problems.

They will still post a huge profit, just not a huge as expected.

Analysts expect Microsoft to warn on Q2 revenue

They'll still pull in at least... 2 billion income for the quarter?

wow, it seems everyone is cutting jobs and until the government decides to help out the lower to middle class with a stimulus package that will actually help them, then the economy is in for a long hard battle. it will also mean the console prices might stay at their current price a good while longer because they cant afford to cut them the way want too.

No.  Only about $4 Billion in profits.  MS doom confirmed.

As time progresses there is going to be alot more of these stories. Ive just read recently that Toyota are preparing for a £1.1 Billion loss due to the failing industry and the strong Yen.

The weird thing is that big firms firing thousands of people is pretty much insignificant for people employment. Companies not hiring people to replace people going into pension etc. pp or small companies firing one or two contributes much much more.

As for MS firing people even if they make profit: They are a company. They have some responsibility for their workers and firing people just for fun doesn't do anything for loyality of employees. But in the end they make money. Keeping people employed even if you do not have work for them has been proven disastrous on and on again. Companies get bloated and die. And I know a few Microsoft employees the little bastards get much more money than other people (even in the same business) and they generally have an excellent academic history so you shouldn't feel too sorry for them.

Oh noooo MS is doomed, give me a break, (rolls eyes and leaves thread)..................
