I have 2 DSes (Phat, Lite) at the moment (and a 3rd one that was broken completely after the warrenty ended) and one Wii, My sister is planning on getting a DS for herself. I am planning on getting a new DS because said 2 DSes have badly cracked hinges with no warrenty left. 5 DSes bought for 1 household vs 1 Wii, DS has better sales opportunity

Agreed.  The hardheld market is much larger than the console market.  Multi-DS household are probably very common.

Have you given Nintendo a call regarding your broken DSes? Doesn't hurt to ask, they might repair for free :)

Probably not, handhelds sell really well and they are more convenient for more people.
