Forums - General - Global Warming. Fact or fiction??

Most of the proposed solutions to help stop global warming would actually be beneficial to our energy infrastructure and would increase investment in things like nuclear and renewable energy. Its essentially a win-win.

Its not like global warming people are telling you to sell your souls or something. I am baffled why some people think it is their duty to criticize those who support global warming.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. It is one thing to argue that for socio-economic, international-security, and environmental reasons it makes sense to reduce our dependence on (primarily imported) fossil fuels; it is another thing entirely to use the most drastic and unrealistic projections of an unproven theory to scare people into supporting legislation which is (primarily) unrealted to its stated goals.

Even if you assume that Human made global warming is happening, the relationship between an increase in CO2 and its resulting increase in temperature is logarithmic; which means that you have to double the quantity of CO2 in the atmosphere in order to increase the worlds temperature by 1 degree Celsius. There are lots of "Smart" people working on global warming, and I have yet to see one person explain how we (as a society) can Double (or Quadruple) our CO2 production without hitting a point where alternative energy sources are far less expensive than fossil fuels ... In other words, even if you assume that the theory is correct it doesn't matter because it will solve itself in a fairly short period of time.

Pretty soon all the ice will be melted and some of the world will be under water

It's better to err on the side of being safe than sorry. Every time environmentalists come up with some "new scam," many people claim it is unfounded. Think the DDT debacle, holes in the ozone layer, species going extinct, etc. A lot of people claimed that environmentalists were just "making it all up."

I'm all for scientific evaluation of a problem, but simply because we can't make a scientific model for something doesn't mean it isn't happening. We still don't have a model that completely explains how gravity works, and only had a rudimentary understanding of it until this century. Does that mean we just made gravity up since scientists couldn't make a model that fully explained it? No, that is a completely ludicrous argument.

I'm not saying global warming is 100% fact or anything, but some people dismiss it far too hastily.

I don't buy into it, to be honest, but I'm glad that we're at least trying to change so that we don't destroy the environment.
Off topic, but... I have to say, we've had some crazy weather this year in my area. Fall was really warm (with one exception of a short snow storm and a day of below freezing temperature), like 50's and 60's, all the way up until a few days ago, when BAM!!! -18 degrees F when I leave for school. By the time I get back from my final a few hours later, we're up to -10!!! I know some of you have probably seen worse, but that's really unheard of where I'm at, despite living close to mountains.

I'm of the belief that it isn't fact, as the world is to complicated to make a valid model of. 1 tiny little error in your model could lead to global warming or global cooling. Also, we only have what, about 100 years worth of actual temperature recordings? Past that we just guesstimate to suit our model.

Also, the same scientists that believe in global warming now, believed in global cooling 40 years ago and wanted to emit tons of CO2 so as to increase the earths temperature.

Now, that doesn't mean we shouldn't be energy efficient or anything like that, as that is just being smart and efficient.

and this will be my last post in this thread, as it will quickly erupt into a giant debate that I don't wish to be part of, but since I'm first I will post.

Pretty much this.

Global warming is fiction. It is created by religious nut cases to spread the lies about the world is coming to an end nonsense. People need to live life instead of making up dooms day nonsense.

It is fiction. However I see no reason not to make an effort to vastly reduce mankind's damaging effects on the environment.
