DMC4 was my first DMC game. I really enjoyed it. You can probably find it quite cheap now, so I would definetly get it. 

Edit: Should have read the entire opening post lol. For £13 it is definetly worth it.

As someone who loves the series and owns DMC4 I must say if you need a stylish action game get DMC3: SE. DMC4 has boring and lazy missions that don't hold a candle to 1 or 3 and underwhelming boss battles and enemy design in general. If you haven't played DMC 1 and 3 I can see how 4 can be good, new, and refreshing. But as a veteran of the series(I completed DMC3 on all modes except Heaven or Hell) I was quite disappointed even though they added instant style change(my most wanted feature for DMC3).

It's a shallow, repetitive and superfluously cinematic; it's also gorgeous looking, has awesome bosses and fast action combat.

When you first play it, you'll love it; after a month or so, you'll regret buying it. A definite rental though just for the experience. Purchase MGS4 instead; that's the real game.
