WarioWare, Inc. was as influential in the Wii design as Mario Party. Namely, not in the slightest.

There first foray into casual gaming was the cube. The big A button was there 2 make games simpler for casuals.

The big button was there - as well as the color-coding, to facilitate usability in general, not just to cater to casuals.

A:

  • most used button, should be largest
  • normally assigned for menu confirmation, give it a green for "yay"

B:

  • secondary button, less prominent
  • normally assigned for cancel actions, give it a red for "nay"

Everyone, both "hardcore" and "casual" gamers (god, I hate those words) benefits from better usability.

Actually, I would attribue a large part of Nintendo's success to having adopted excellent usability and accessibility with its product design.

DS:

Touchscreen - everyone knows and uses a pen or pencil in their daily lives, so having touch mitigates the intimidation factor of too many button, plus users know what to do with a pen - not necessarily buttons and a D-pad, especially if you've never used one before.

Wii:

Motion - no matter who you are, it is more natural (not more efficient or more accurate, but more natural) to use natural motions to bat, to bowl, to punch, even to fish. There is no memory load for these actions, making gameplay instantly accessible. With buttons, you have to associate buttons to actions, which places cognitive and memory loads on the user.

With that Wario spinning game, I think Nintendo was testing the waters, but then again, if the GCN controller is any indication, Nintendo has been pursuing better usability and accessibility goals since the last generation. Only this generation are they reaping the rewards.

No not influential in regards to the Wii, the DS was a test bed for the Wii theory(if it flopped nintendo said, they would have been in deep shit), but nintendo have filed a patent for a tilt sensitive handheld, so it definintly influenced that. =D

Wario GBA came out before the DS so it may have had a major infuence on it aswell. I think Wario shows the turnign point in Nintendo's strategy from hardore to casual. Since this strategy seems to be working I think this is why it has to be comsidered as the most infuential game ever.

I know tis may be blasphemous but I think Wario may now be more inportant than Mario in this repsect.

I agree that Wario may be the early roots of the DS and Wii, but I disagree with the part I bolded. I think their strategy is to include the casuals not to exclude the "hardcore" (whatever that means).

Personally I think Wario and Mario are both important. Using your logic: It took Wario to get the Wii I can go back even further and say it took Mario to get to Wario and thus it took Mario to get to the Wii. These lines of thinking are completely transative and you can go back a long long ways and probably find some way to say that without Jesus there would be no Wii.

To Each Man, Responsibility

In that case it took Gunpei Yokoi since the first Wario game was Wario Land for the GB, and without Wario there wouldn't have been a Wario Ware.

The first Wario game was WarioWare Inc: Mega Microgames (for the GBA) which came out in 2003, which is the game I am refering to.

Alright, can we please like... refer to the games we are addressing correctly?  I was so confused at first.  There is no Wario GBA.  I first thought you were talking about Warioland 4 or something.  Just say "Warioware" if that is what you are refering to.  And no, WarioWare Inc: Mega Microgames is NOT the first Wario game; it is the first WarioWARE game.  Try to be clearer next time.  Also don't try to pretend that some of my favorite handheld games ever existed.  Warioland 1 2 and 3 were great games.  I never really got into 4 so I can't say.

Are you talking about WarioWare?

That series is probably my least favorite of all time >_>
