People keep saying things like how did Mama Mia, etc, do? It doesn't matter how they did. To become a viable medium, a format only needs its first killer app and then the rest of the market will follow. The Dark Knight has been blu-rays killer app since it was released in movie theatres last summer. No one wants to watch the amazing vistas that were in that movie in the theatre reduced to dvd quality. The next blu-rays that will increase the popularity of the format: Twilight (you don't want to watch them running up trees in degraded dvd format), The Spirit, Cormac Macarthy's The Road, and finally The Watchmen blu-ray will make dvd / blu-ray marketshare 50/ 50 next Christmas.
