Forums - Sales Discussion - Dark Knight shifts 600,000 on blu-ray

The Dark Knight sales are an exception, not the rule. It was big in theaters and of course it's big on DVD, Blu ray, and digital downloads.

BR players weren't below $200 for the whole year... It needs time to enter the mainstream

I have a hard time believing Blu-Ray is entering the mainstream when I read tidbits like these:

Players for Blu-ray discs, the high-definition successor to the DVD, did relatively well, since the prices are now below $200. Retailers sold 147,000 units, excluding Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 consoles, which can also play the discs. But the older format is still king: Three times as many DVD players were sold.

Actually this surprised me... Who the heck does not have a DVD player yet? I guess many people are buying upscaling ones which could explain it.

People are probably upgrading to upscaling DVD players. These are dirt cheap now as well.

Infamous...blu-ray is gaining market share not loosing it, microsoft believes blu-ray is a dead format. 30% market share of the biggest movie of the year isnt bad.

Do you have an evidence of this?

Since so many people were asking for a link

By the way, it's not 30% but "between 25% and 30%"

hmm, I think there are alot of people like me with the Dark Knight..

It is the only movie I am buying on BD, for the rest of this year. I think to most people TDK is such an awsome movie it is worth the premium price to have the BD.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

What is with the assumption that these sales "show that PS3 users will buy movies on occasion"?

This Black Friday showed that BD players was one of this years hottest sellers.

Now I must ask this to those who think only PS3 users are buying this movie.

What did people buy all these BD players for? Anticipation of new hit movies like "The Dark Knight" maybe?

Thank you.  The problem was the Joel created a thread and the included a quote from a short without a link, something which should not be done.

Cool, good to see strong BluRay launch sales. Be interesting to graph the DVD:BluRay ratio for titles over time. I'm curious to see the sales ratios 2-3 months after titles have been out (makes sense that early adopters buy a lot of the premium product).

Gesta Non Verba

Nocturnal is helping companies get cheaper game ratings in Australia:

Wii code: 2263 4706 2910 1099

It was expected that such a big movie would bost sales. A movie of such quality and such popularity was bound to do something. Must be selling like crazy on DVD.
