There are different forms of the Uncanny Valley and those movies are CGI. In real time (HEAVY RAIN) there has yet to be a step this close to real life. From all that's been shown HEACY RAIN is the closest consoles have gotten. The uncanny valley actually began with robots end as ComputerGeneratedImage (CGI) got more advanced, it started applying that “uncanny” feel to faces, movement, etc. As far as whats gotten the closest: Movies- Beowulf, Polar Express, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. Games: HEAVY RAIN - to me it's all in the uncanny valley, Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis, Fight Night Round 3, and Mass Effect. It's gettin there Vlad, stay tuned bud :)

 

Just because it's in real-time does not automatically put it in the uncanny valley, which is what forevercloud is saying. Even if its animations and models are the best on consoles it really does not mean it's in the valley. Until games start looking even more like Beowulf we can't really place them in the uncanny valley.'

I'm sorry that I have gazed upon these pics with my untrained eyes. I'll come back to this thread Friday  night/ Satruday morning after finals when my eyes have become more "trained."

It certainlly has some of the most intense character models I've ever seen, but that just stands out against the background that doesn't even come close to reaching the level of the characters

Uhhh... no. Heavy Rains Graphics are just downright untouchable though.

No what I'm saying is the definition of Uncanny Valley fits HEAVY RAIN. Just watch the 30 minute gameplay footage on GameTrailers, you'll get a better idea. Also, HEAVY RAIN has plenty of dev time left to be put into it. Imagine what it will look like when it releases Holiday 09...OMG. However, I can see why Beowulf and Polar Express have you set. I don't blame you, when games start lookin like that then we really will know what kind of power we're dealing with. Hell, Beowulf just about looks real, let alone being in “uncanny” status.

Notice where Disneay Features and The Incredibles stand, from what I'm seeing the game hasn't even matched those, and the actual valley begins after them.

The OP's arms are very long, the subject in those images look nothing alike, nothing.

Also photorealism was not achieved in anyway.

The level of reaching is astounding. I saw another thread where someone posted a video of a woman being interviewed but the womans face was completely digital, that to me was photorealism... no it was photorealism.

People are talking about this game being in the uncanny valley like it's a good thing.

It generally means the game looks so close to reality, but not quite, that it looks terrible.

Heavy Rain -for all its technical marvel- looks terrible.
