After the most recent sales update, the Wii is almost at 18M unts in the Americas and Sony's black box is at about 17.9M units worldwide.  The Wii now has more in one major sales region than the PS3 has worldwide.

Absolutely mind-boggling.

(The 360 was in this position about a year ago because of its head start, but it's unlikely to ever hold that advantage again.  The Wii came in and did it with a virtually simultaneous launch.)

Sony had this kind of advantage for the majority of the PS2 generation, if not all of it.  It is, in my opinion, one metric of hardware sales domination.

It was like this for a while, and then the PS3 passed the Wii's American total at some point in time (to which I can't remember). The PS3 will likely pass the Wii's American total in 2009 again, and considering that the PS2 more than doubled the Xbox and Gamecube's total sales worldwide in both America and Europe just shows you that it's not that rare for a first place console.
