Maybe. If Home is popular, Sony will earn alot on advertising deals (and they can heavily promote their own products for free), but Home needs to be interesting in order te be popular. Let's hope it does get popular!

Me too. We got it 2 days before everyone else.
I have been very impressed with the downloads, graphics, loading times, and some of the mini-games. I have not been impressed by the fat white guy with pink hair that is constantly getting in my face doing the running man dance.
I hope the open beta includes game launching, game spaces, and some of the third party spaces. Ultimately, this is where Home will succeed or fail.
Thanks for the input, Jeff.

it's not like it's a secret that you're anti-sony for no reason..
on topic:
I can't really see Home being a cash cow. Yeah, it'll make them a few million a year, but not very much in the grand scheme of things. When the install base grows a bit bigger, it might make a decent amount for them, but only time will tell. Micro-transactions are nice, but not when no one has any money to 'micro-transact' (yeah not a word I know..)
I don't think home will be a cash cow, I think it will be bad for sony and the PS3. I like xboxlive as it is closed and there is no danager of anything getting uploaded or bad content. I let my 8 year old play on xboxlive with her friends, I would never let her play on home. All it will take is one or two stories about pedophiles that have moved from Second life to Home and that will bring all the good work down. There has already been conserns raised about this in the media and this is not good news for Sony. They will have to prove to me that it is safe for kids and after second life that is going to be hard.
i have been in the beta and there was nothing to do in home other than bowling, and that was boring. Nothing streams everything has to download full before you can see it and that is awful, on top of that there are only 5 places you can go and most are empty, i hope all that was because it was a beta, but for something that has been in development for so long is very disappointing.

I don't think anyone thinks this will somehow make SCE profitable or something. If LBP would have sold 3 million by now, it wouldn't affect SCE's financials that much (10 million?) but it would still cut the losses, which is very important.

There is currently a minimum age of 18 required for Home. I wouldn't let my 8 year old on xbox live or PSN without supervision. Same goes for Home if they remove the age requirement.

| RPG said: So it finally releases tomorrow and it is pretty good, the Beta was fun but nothing to get very excited about. Of course Home is not for gamers (I know you want to believe it is but it's not) but is simply a cashcow for Sony. Many companies have already signed to advertise on Home inclusind Capcom, Ubisoft, Disney etc and I cant think of the prices to advertise in home being anything but cheap. Home was expensive as it has taken well over a year but it finally releases and day 1 it will begin to pay for itself. Another thing about Home is that it will continue to evolve and chances are will go onto the next Playstation console so with that said, do you think Home will become the biggest Playstation cashcow for Sony? I think it will eclipse Gran Turismo which has made Sony a lot of money. The success of Home will be nothing but good for gamers. That money will have to go somewhere and as a big company it is likely Sony will recycle any money made back into the Plsyatation brand ie more games, increase in firsty party studios etc. To everyone who said Home was useless................just lol. |
Home will be fortunate to break even. it will not be a cash cow. It's going to require tons of bandwidth and setup/R&D costs for solely advertising revenue? It's got less chance of being Sony's biggest cash cow than the PS3 hardware itself. Sony's hope, I'm pretty sure, is for it to just pay for itself. Home was made as a selling point for the PS3 to increase their userbase, not a revenue generator. Infact, it's popularity could be a bad thing. Think of how many people play 1 MMORPG or game like the SIMs to the exclusion of all other titles. If home is a big hit, lots of people will be logging in and spending nothing, eating bandwidth, and ultimately buying less games. Do you think advertisers are paying $50 per year PER PERSON using the service?
