Forums - Gaming Discussion - "PS3 Has No Games" Argument Needs To Die A Terrible Death

I think we're all aware of the enduring nature of stigmas and stereotypes - it's why we still have parents believing games are just for kids - and if we're not careful, certain stereotypes can run rampant and directly influence consumers who are seeking information. Since the launch of the PlayStation 3, the default argument against it, presented by almost everyone from retailers to idiotic fanboys, is this: "but it has no games!"

I was in a Best Buy today, with no intention of stopping near the game section (I was shopping for other people; 'tis the season and all that), and I overheard one of those "Geek Squad" register biscuits trying to help a customer decide between the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. I paused and pretended to take an interest in the accessories display, as I'm always interested to hear just how ill-informed the retailers really are. At first, it sounded like he knew what he was talking about: Live is a slightly better online service but the Network is free, the 360 still suffers from a system failure but things are getting better, and if you opt for the Arcade version, you can nab a 360 for only $199. Yes, all true. Then I heard it- "but the one thing you have to remember is that the PS3 still doesn't have many games out." I wanted to rip open a Wii-mote and jam it into his eye socket. Can we get past the outdated ignorance, please?

At the start of the PS3's lifespan and well into 2007, there was no denying the system had a lack of software. It tends to happen; it has happened to just about every console in history, and that most certainly includes the Xbox 360. But for some reason, everyone has just forgotten about that and still assume the PS3 "has no games." Right. If you check either GameRankings or Metacritic (I don't care what source you use; the results will be very similar), you will notice that both the PS3 and 360 have almost the same number of titles rated over 80% in 2008, and the same holds true for the elite gems over 90%. Furthermore, with the exception of Gears of War III, the PS3 exclusive lineup in 2008 - featuring Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, LittleBigPlanet, Wipeout HD, and Resistance 2 - rocks the house, and third-party developers have basically worked past all their initial PS3 issues. The days of the pathetic 360-to-PS3 port are gone.

Yes, the 360 has been out for a full year longer, so of course it has "more" games. But as it currently stands, are we really going backwards and talking about games like Kameo? What we're talking about is the here and now, and besides a few exclusives here and there (Fable II and Left 4 Dead are worth mentioning), the PS3 has just about everything the 360 has, and then some. Here's a look at the year's best, and I doubt many will disagree with the list:

  • Grand Theft Auto IV
  • LittleBigPlanet
  • Bioshock
  • Gears of War 2
  • World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King
  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl
  • Fallout 3
  • Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
  • Braid
  • Rock Band 2
  • God of War: Chains of Olympus
  • Dead Space
  • Left 4 Dead
  • Resistance 2
  • Burnout Paradise
  • Devil May Cry 4
  • Fable II
  • FIFA Soccer 09
  • Prince of Persia
  • Wipeout HD
  • Soul Calibur IV
  • Sins of a Solar Empire
  • Valkyria Chronicles
  • Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
  • Guitar Hero: World Tour
  • Far Cry 2
  • MotorStorm: Pacific Rift
  • Call of Duty: World at War
  • Mirror's Edge
  • Pure

These are 30 of the year's best, and and of this list, 21 are available on the PS3 while 19 are available on the 360, and there are 6 that are exclusive to the PS3 while 4 are exclusive to the 360. Overall, the PS3 has 91 titles that have an average review score of 80% or higher at GameRankings, and the 360 has 139 at 80% or higher. Now, factor in that the 360 came out one full year earlier, and you end up with this statistic: the 360 has produced 139 80%+ games in just over 3 years time while the PS3 has produced 91 80%+ games in just over 2 years time. ...I'm not very good at math, but I believe the quality ratio is pretty damn similar.

Anyway, I'm just sick and tired of hearing this ridiculous argument from people who claim to know something about video games. There are pluses and minuses for every system out there, but in no way can the argument regarding lacking software for the PS3 be used. Not ever again. Hell, 2009 will add exclusives like Killzone 2 (wait for the explosion, 360 fanboys), Heavy Rain, God of War III (wait for that explosion, too), Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and possibly Gran Turismo 5...I'm sorry but what will either Microsoft or Nintendo produce to compete with that? The PS3 owned the exclusive battle in 2008, and it will do so again in 2009. That is the prediction.

In other words Branko2166

To its credit, the PS3 seems lacking in exclusive shooter games compared to the 360. Since the majority of the people who declare that the PS3 has no games are gun-toting frat boys with 360s, it doesn't seem that odd for this stigma to continue.

By the way, that was a pretty terrible list. You include games like Pure, Mirror's Edge, and Motorstorm 2 while forgetting games like Boom Blox, De Blob, World of Goo, etc. Doesn't seem like the most fair list to me.

The PS3 now has the IMO great Resistance 2, which does offer a lot of unique features (like lag free 60 player online battles, 8 player co-op and immense boss battles just like Warhawk and the PS3 has MGS4, which is considered to be the best of its gerne. Soon the PS3 has Killzone 2 which is on track to become the most impressive shooter exclusive ever, so I think fanboys will run out of arguments.

From another perspective:

Best sold 360 games so far:

1) Halo 3- Microsoft (exclusive)
2) Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Activision (on both)
3) Grand Theft Auto IV Take-Two Interactive (on both)
4) Gears Of War Microsoft (exclusive)
5) Forza Motorsport 2 Microsoft (exclusive)
6) Assassins Creed Ubisoft (on both)
7) Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock RedOctane (on both)
8) Gears of War 2 Microsoft (exclusive)
9) Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion 2K Games (on both)
10) Marvel: Ultimate Alliance Activision (on both)
11) Call of Duty: World at War (on both)
12) Madden NFL 08 Electronic Arts (on both)
13) Guitar Hero II RedOctane (on both)
14) Call of Duty 2 Activision (too old)
15) Tom Clancy Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter Ubisoft (on both)
16) Tom Clancy Rainbow Six: Vegas Ubisoft (on both)
17) Call of Duty 3 Spike (on both)
18) Mass Effect Microsoft (exclusive)
19) Bioshock 2K Games (on both)
20) Rock Band MTV Games (on both)
21) Saints Row THQ (too old, part 2 also on PS3)
22) Madden NFL 07 Electronic Arts (on both)
23) Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 Ubisoft (on both)
24) Fable II Microsoft (exclusive)
25) Fight Night Round 3 EA (on both)

6 Microsoft published exclusives.
17 3rd party multi-platformers available for both systems.
2 old games, which however have received sequels on the PS3 as well.

This seems to back up perspectives this FUD needs to end as it makes no sense.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

This is so true. To every one in the street, MGS is not a must have game. All people see is review after review say that the 360 version of all the good multiplatform games are better then the PS3. Then they go to there local computer store and see the PS3 at £300 and then the 360 at £100. People are not stupid.
