Blu-ray Surpasses DVD in Japan

Posted December 9, 2008 10:06 AM by Josh Dreuth

According to the latest GfK Retail and Technology Japan data, Blu-ray recorders broke the 50% barrier during the first week of November, meaning that unit sales of Blu-ray recorders surpassed that of DVD recorders for the first time ever. Compared to the same time last year, when Blu-ray's market share was only 10%, the format has shown rapid growth.

Additionally, statistics show that the Blu-ray format is outpacing DVD in replacement speed as well. The high definition format is replacing DVD recorders 1.5 times faster than DVD recorders replaced VHS decks. The trend is expected to continue as recorder prices continue to drop.

No it's not. Remember what sony wanted with the ps3? they want the ps3 to be used as the primary blu-ray player. As this article states, there are a lot of blu-ray players being sold. That's all fine and such, but if we look at our weekly ps3 numbers, you see there are only about 20-30k sold. I really think this article means there are a lot more players sold. And this is not what sony wants.

Good for blu-ray ^_^ Only going to get better from here on out :)

Keep in mind Neos, the more popular blu-ray gets, the more incentive Microsoft will have to put it in they're next box ;)
