I've never heard of this problem either. None of my friends have had this problem, but they have had another problem with their PS3 not staying on for more than a couple of seconds, which isn't long enough to back up the hard drive, hence losing all their game data.

The early drives of most media formats tend to be (somewhat) unreliable, but (so far) Blu-Ray has done much better than most media formats in terms of reliability.
