Forums - Gaming - Editorial: Nintendo’s Wii Is The Gaming Industry’s Financial Scapegoat

Killzone3, have you actually played Mario Party 8?

I'd guess no.  But in his mind "Mini-games = Crap" so it wouldn't matter how good it was.  All the Mario Party games are fun though.  Usually only with friends though since the computer Ai's really suck.

Go to metacritic and compare the Wii's library to the 360's and PS3's. It becomes quickly apparent that the Wii has a growing list of subpar games and relatively few good titles(above 80-85). It's true that SMG, SSBB, and MP3 are coming and all should review very well but it also is true that what appears to be a tsunami of crap will also wash in with it.

I think Nintendo is partly to blame since they continually tried to push Wii development by mentioning low cost for making a game on the Wii (sub 5 million and when you factor in the advertising costs into that it leaves very little for developing a quality AAA or even A game).

Also the fact that Nintendo is publishing poor games themselves (Mario Party 8) which are having huge sales doesn't help the problem.

Who's the scapegoat?

How was he owned?  The author of the article used the word scapegoat to mean that the Wii was being used as an excuse to produce "cheapskate games and halfwitted ports" instead of actually having to put the money required into a game to make a good one.  He didn't mean it as an excuse for losses or poor profits.

Are cheapskate games being made for the Wii because of the system or are cheapskate games being made because developers put most of their money into developing PS3 and 360 games?

Sqrls posts would seem to indicate later was the case. It will probably take till the end of 2008 before we know the answer to that however.

Either way it matters little to me as i'll just keep picking up Wii games until they don't interest me anymore and 360 games to play at my friends, then i'll get a PS3 and pick up all the "Killer Aps" cheap at a used videogame store.

Here's what I found when I looked at the Metascores back on June 24:

Wii game reviews on Metacritic.
Of the 63 listed Wii games, 12 (19%) have a rating of 75+, 40 (63%) have a rating of 50-74, and 11 (17%) have a rating below 50. Two (3%) games are rated above a 90: Zelda and Resident Evil 4 (originally released on the GameCube and PS2 in 2005).

PS3 game reviews on Metacritic.
Of the 46 listed PS3 games, 22 (48%) have a rating of 75+, 21 (46%) have a rating of 50-74, and only 3 (6%) have a rating below 50. One game (2%) is rated above a 90: Oblivion.

360 game reviews on Metacritic.
Of the 203 listed 360 games, 88 (43%) have a rating of 75+, 106 (52%) have a rating of 50-74, and only 9 (4%) have a rating below 50. Seven games (3%) have a rating above 90, with Gears of War and Oblivion the highest rated.

Rating..... Wii..... PS3..... 360
90-100 ....... 2 ....... 1 ....... 7
80-89 ....... 4 ....... 13 ....... 49
75-79 ....... 6 ....... 8 ....... 32
65-74 ...... 22 ...... 12 ...... 59
50-64 ...... 18 ....... 9 ...... 47
00-49 ...... 11 ....... 3 ....... 9
Total ....... 63 ...... 46 ...... 203

So each console has roughly the same percentage (2-3%) of 90+ games, but Wii games are less than half as likely to be rated 75-100 as PS3 and 360 games.

We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai

It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps

We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games. - Activision CEO Bobby Kotick

Off topic, but why is that Sony/MS fans usually refer to metacritic when talking about average review scores and Nintendo fans refer to gamerankings for the same matter?

Are the numbers very different?  I believe the two sites are affiliated with each other.

Haha, funny article. Another funny thing: how is that when, in GC era, some people was like "meh... it has awezome games... but it doesn't has lots of games! I want lots of games!"... and now in Wii era, the same people are like "meh... it has lots of games... but it doesn't has awezome games! I want awezome games"

And right now, devs aren't investing lots on their Wii games two reasons:

1st: They invested most of their money on the supposed-to-dominate-the-world PS3
2nd: Now, they need to recover the money they lost on the 1st reason, so they produce cheap games.

Also, how is that Excite Truck sucks? It's a very fun game.

I'd guess the difference would be the sources they use. Metacritics list their review choices. Gamerankings i haven't found their list yet, they might just use all reviews.

Oh... and also, for those calling "Wii Sports" a crappy demo and a bad game it should be noted that it's got a 76 on metacritics which is still in the green AKA a good game by reviewer standards.

Leave it to Killzone3 to find one of the most anti-Wii articles on the net and deem it “not bad”.
