Forums - Gaming - 5th gen: The possible pinnacle of 2D?

Most of us on VGC experienced the 5th gen, with its gritty and raw 3D, a big innovation for home consoles at the time, but one that seems unlikeable today to some of the same people that glorified it back in the day.

It was blocky, extremely jaggy, low resolution... I could go on... but neverthless, people liked it. With the coming of the 6th gen consoles, people started thinking: was the move into 3rd graphics a premature one? one that the hardware of the time couldn't support well? what if that hardware was used for doing 2d/2.5d graphics? how would the games turn out then? how would this gen be remembered? what would be the impact? how would 6th gen adventure games look without an Ocarina of Time to back them up? JRPG's without FF VII? etc etc...

I'd say, this gen would turn out phenomenal. A combination of powerful HW with optical media (hell, even the N64 carts are perfectly good) would bring fantastic results. Imagine all games in beautiful and clear and colourful 2d, the best sprites you could imagine... all working fast and smooth. A possible impact, a probable one, actually - is seeing all the experemintation with 3D that the 5th gen did, in the 6th...

Discuss!

P.S: The motivation behind this thread is me emulating the SNES - not nostalgia (I was 2-3 when the console peaked =P)... plus I wanna make a 2d game myself.

Around the Network

This would make better sense if 2D gaming died off during the 5th gen, but it didn't. Some of the best 2D games in the world (including the best 2-D Metroid) were made long after the Playstation and N64 launched.

I don't think that 3D came out too early. Some playstation games released around 1999-2000 were really impressive (tomb raider 4, final fantasy IX, ...). Developpers needed to learn how to create a 3D world, and it took some times!

Lost Winds. Super Paper Mario. Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. Visually, Wario Shake (haven't played it yet). I wouldn't say 2D peaked 10 years ago.

The fourth generation was the pinnacle of 2D and the golden age of gaming. Games such as FFVI, LoZ:LttP, Earthbound, Super Metroid, Secret of Mana, Super Mario World and heaps of others.

2D continues to exist but true epic games (Such as FF, LoZ, Metroid) no longer are made in 2D, it has definitely declined with the rise of 3D.
