@Naz,

It can't do height but the rest you have correct. It does know which direction is down however as gravity applies constant acceleration on the wii-mote.

The known real-world dimensions of the spacing between the LEDs on the bar allows the Wii Remote to calculate its distance from the bar, while the tilt and rotation of the Wii Remote with respect to the ground can be calculated from the relative angle of the Sensor Bar (which sees the bar as two bright dots) and the data sensed by the accelerometers.

Edit: I suppose I probably misinterpreted that to some extent. You're right it doesnt do height with respect to the ground, just tilt and angle with respect to the ground.  I edited the original post to reflect this.

 Yes but none of this tells you how far the Wii-mote is from the ground unless it knows how far from the ground the sensor bar is.

What you are saying is that from the following information you can calculate how high the wii-mote is from the ground...

The Wii-mote is 10 feet away at a downward angle of 45 degrees. The accelerometers detect no motion except that generated by gravity.

Yeah, I read it wrong heh.

 Don't even sweat it, I do crap like that all the time.

Edit: I love the "my mom plays it" or "my children play it" methods of attacking the Wii. It's a very entertaining way to demean it. I think it's especially entertaining coming from a PS3 owner, when clearly based on game sales alone there are more core gamers with Wiis than PS3s.

Yes, that's always irritated me too. It's one of those subtle jabs that one cannot dispute because there isn't really an argument being breached.  I try not to take jabs like that, although I'm sure they're nestled within my subconscious on occassion whether I like it or not. Don't get me wrong, the fat mentally handicapped kid down the block loves these types of jabs, but they're not for noble, smart people like me.

lol, yeah I am the same way.  Sometimes I look back at a post and think "wow that came out wrong".  But at the same time I hate when I feel like I have to preface every little thing I am saying because people are being so touchy.

The wii does not use true motion contols as some would like to think, it judges if you are moving the contoller in a side to side motion or up and down, or if you move it fast, the same thing is true for the sixaxis, it has tilt and the buttons tell how hard you are pressing them, they even had pressure sensitive buttons on the dualshock controller.

If the wii2 can have true motion sensing controls then that would be different, but that would need lots of sensors or a camera. The PSeye had motion controls, i could truly move and see it on screen, the wii just makes you think it has true motion controls.

The wii is nothing truly amazing for this generation, if it never came out the PS2 would still be selling, the market would not fade away with the Playstation 3 or the xbox 360.

The wii is lots of fun, don't get me wrong with what i said above, i play it all the time with my sisters kids. It's a great system, but don't try to take it for more then what it is, it's just another console from Nintendo.

Lol I hate to reply to the same thing again but I missed the PSeye part.  The Playstation Eye is actually much more limited than you seem to think.  I'm assuming you are refering to the video where the man moves his hand near the card and the card animation reacts to it.  All that shows is it can sense movement.  That's it.  There was movement near the card, and it attacked that area.  It can not sense depth, acceleration, or even define the general shape of the object that's moving.  All it's capturing is simple movement.  Technically, it doesn't even have the capabilities of the accelerometer in the Wiimote.

Yeah, I have tried to avoid retaliating to statements like that but they build up and grate on my nerves.  It's such an odd thing to complain about.  I don't understand why people think it's the best way to insult the Wii now.  The same can be said of the people who jump on an opportunity to show that the Wii is beginning to meet demand.  That's not a bad thing lol.  It means more people are able to find them easily and it means it's more likely the Wii will be easy to locate around the holidays.

Sorry, but I still think that the Wii is a downgrade from the great Gamecube. The Wii-mote really puts a limit on how great a game can be, and it shows in alot of the games that are out. In my opinion, the Wii-mote simply is not for normal game; instead it's for mini-games like Wii Sports, for example. Due to it's lack of buttons and no second analog stick, the Wii fails to control games at the same level as the classic controler. Yes, the Wii has some games comming out (Mario Galaxy) with great graphics, however, the most important thing is game play, and thats what the Wii lacks...

 To you my good friend all i have to say is that developers have barely scratched the potential of Wii's tech, I don't think graphics are any thing to be oworried about due to the fact that super mario galaxy proves beyond a shadow of a doubt, that wii has some extreme gpu power under the hood, even if it does not match the other consoles. To be fair i look at Mario galaxy, and i am impressed as much as much as i was when i first saw the  gears of war screens. (but maybe thats because i didn't think the wii could pull something like that off). U have to admit that mario galaxy is very impressive, Visually.

@Warlord_.

In reply to ur comment, even if the wii has got true motion sensing, as u put it. I don't think that matters, Its a new and interesting way to inteact with  games, and i believe thats what caught peoples eyes. Like i mentioned earlier, wii tech has not been exploited to its fullest potential, give it till the end of 2008.
