Having to buy an expensive HDTV to get a PS3, isn't a cheap entry into PS3 gaming.

"Free deals" for all the consoles exist, but they aren't really free. A contract running for two years with you paying more than usual isn't really free (paying more than standalone contract from the same supplier or competitors). Of course the companies try to sell it as such, but these companies are out on making a profit.

You can also buy anything paying on a monthly basis (usually paying a little extra).

You were claiming the entry price for the 360 in Italy to be 149€ based on a limited offer available only in a single chain with 11 stores for a country with 116.000 square miles and 60 million habitants. If we are to follow your logic, the ps3 is free.

£30 times 18 is 540 pounds, a PS3 costs the company ~240 pound or less (Sony is taking losses), a Samsung phone ~100 pounds or less (the phones are expensive for consumers to buy standalone intentionally, but not that expensive really for retailers). So for the rest you pay at least ~200 pounds per 18 months, about 11.10 pounds per month (including taxes).

For 10 pounds if you have a phone already you probably have a similar contract from the same or other provider. For example in the Netherlands standalone contracts for 2 and a half Euros (~2 pounds), 120 minutes per month and 20 SMS, outside the contract it becomes expensive, the companies take this into account as well, they don't generate huge profits for nothing.

In reality it's all very cheap for the providers, that's why they generate such huge profits. Text messages for today's technology standards take up very little data.

I am just trying to make you understand how this works, free Wii for a 12.50 Euro mobile contract for 24 months (for a contract KPN "sells" for 25 Euros per month separately, a 50% discount on that as well ).

A "free" laptop, a "free" HDTV, etc, they are finely tuned deals with the companies intended on generating a profit.
