Forums - Gaming - Did we really jump from 2D to 3D too soon?

While on VGChartz, I came across the idea that some people here think that we jumped from 2D to 3D too soon, and gaming wasn't really fully prepared for it.

Who feels this way?

You can never be fully prepared to something new you just have to jump in and try it out until you get used to it. I think the jump was perfectly timed. People do get bored of the same thing over and over again and (well mostly) the industry needs something new every now and then.

I do not feel that way. Super Mario 64 was one of the early 3d offerings, and I still, today, believe that the game was one of the best of all time.

However, I am growing concerned that a lot of developers are losing what makes 3d-games great. Like, in 2D, sequels were almost always improvements of their predecessors (or so I believe), while in 3D gaming, that's not the case. People try and innovate, or make pretty graphics etc. instead of just sticking to the fun, sometimes, and that's too bad.
