Forums - Gaming - If the PS2 sold over 140 million where are the gamers?

So with about 80 million consoles sold for the current gen in home platforms i want to know where are the gamers? the top console for the current gen is filled with non-gamers. some ps2 fans went to the 360 while others went to the PS3. if so much of the PS2 install base hasn't moved up a gen then where did they go? also since most of own a next gen console if you did have a PS2 what system do you have now.

perhaps they switched to PC? It was recently estimated that there are over 280 millions PC gamers today.

My guess is several bought multiple PS2. Also they may be waiting for a title or a price drop to be released. The PS2 also sold well because it was a DVD player and the format was becoming increasingly popular. Blu-ray on the other hand is not.

Pixel Art can be fun.

With just 95 million video cards sold in the last three years? I see...

this gen is too expensive for most gamers, they'll upgrade when they'll be able top get the console they want for 199$ or less

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

140m consoles is not 140m users. A fair few of those would have had multiple consoles. My brother had 3 at least.

Most who have moved went to Wii. Then some went to the 360. Then less went to the PS3. But by breakdowns I'd say...

Japan: Wii, then PS3, then 360

US: Wii, then 360, then PS3

EU: Unknown. I'd say most went to the Wii. Maybe Wii, then PS3, then 360.

that's is a bias view considering that probably 90% of PS3 owners were former PS2 owners. i believe that PS2 might have went PS3 360 then Wii or PS3 Wii then 360.

There are a lot of people who bought the PS2 and only used it for a few weeks or can only afford 1-2 titles...

We are seeing the same thing with Wii. They are outselling hardware wise. But, in software, 360 and PS3 are overselling proportionately to the hardware install base. This shows that there are more people that invest in new software for their PS3's and 360's in an ongoing basis then people using the Wii. With the Wii, we are seeing all the same software being sold week after week. In PS3 and 360 top software only lasts a few weeks generally and then disappears for new titles that are coming out. Unless the distributor is Nintendo, almost all the same titles consistently stay in the top sellers for the Wii.

There are also many people who bought a ps2 as a cheap DVD-player. Just like owning a good PC doesn´t mean the user will use it to play games on it.

Gaming is more expensive now. ITs not just the consoles . Its consoles, games, peripherals and then online fees (at least for the 36)).

Also, some may have moved to portables since they have grown up now and have less time. :)
