The remark wasn't mine, but it could as well had been. Using no antivirus even on Vista is not for everyone. You need common sense and knowledge of how viruses are caught and spread. You also need the knowledge and willingness to backup your data, which is a good idea anyway even ignoring viruses.

However, if you have those attributes (essentially if you're a savvy and careful computer user) it's perfectly fine to use Vista and even XP/2000 without any antivirus. Antiviruses cause some trouble and lower performance, so I avoid using them as much as possible.

I was using AVG Free until zonealarm gave out a free version of the Pro and am using that now.
I actually like zonealarm, it acts as both firewall and antivirus. The license only last 1 year, however.

Will I buy it when it expires? No. Why pay when I could get free alternatives? :)

Although, I highly recommend it for non-technical people.
